Win7 does not start up correctly

Hi,

a very odd observation that I made over the last couple of days:

Windows 7 freezes in the start up procedure every time I boot it up after it was shut down over a longer period of time (6-8 hrs, e.g. over night). I also observed that it starts up until the login screen and then reboots automatically prompting me to choose whether I want to start it in safe mode or normally.

If I shut down Win 7 and boot it up after a shorter period of time (e.g. half an hour or one hour) it starts without any problems.

Any ideas ? Has anybody observed a similar behavior ?

I am using Win 7 Professional 32-bit on a recently installed system.

Thanks, Daniel.

Yes, I updated the drivers for my components, so theoretically that should not pose a problem.

What really intrigues me is that it only happens when Win7 was shut down for a longer period of time.

I worked with the system on Sunday for a full day installing / updating and restarting / shutting down continually without running into a start up problem once.

Hello Dsoffner, Welcome to SF,

Try to Reboot the System in Selective Startup see whether you have the same issue. Maybe some startup item is messing up

Good luck,
Captain

Hi there,

unfortunately Selective Startup did not help. I still have the same problem.
I even re-installed Windows 7 from the scratch and updated the drivers - still during startup the screen hangs at "Starting Windows" after the machine was shut down for a longer period of time.

Now, I have two theories and would appreciate any comment or validation:

1. It could be the power supply. I have a 500W PSU which may not be enough according to the calculations I made here (eXtreme Power Supply Calculator). According to the calculator I would need at least 520W with my configuration. I also found this forum entry (http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/56340-pls-help-me-my-windows7-start-up-delay.html) with exactly the same problem and the PSU explanation.

2. It could also be my HDD configuration in the BIOS. I have the Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM 32MB SATA 3Gbs. Anything I would need to take care of in the BIOS configuration ?

Thanks, Daniel.
