This isnt an actual BSOD but similar. About half the time I try to make my laptop sleep (Windows 7 x64), instead it locks up and the fan suddenly gets louder at max speed.

How can I troubleshoot this to see what process or driver is the culprit?

If your fan gets louder, then either your fan is bad, a sensor is giving the fan bad information, or your laptop is overheating.

I suggest running a program called Speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) to check your internal temperatures. Also, Speedfan allows you to set the fan speed manually, rather than letting it be set automatically. But be careful with setting the fan speed too slow, because if the computer is overheating, you will want the fan to run fast enough.
