Crash when laptop tries to sleep

It's a Dell Latitude D620. Was fine for about six months, not this problem appears every time the Laptop goes to sleep or I tell it to sleep.

- Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit version
- Full retail install onto a fresh hard drive 6-8 months ago
- This is a new problem. MAchine was working like a champ until
- No other issues with machine...this problem only appears when the machine tries to sleep. Once rebooted, it starts back up just fine. It does tell me it's recovered from an abnormal shutdown, though, and I tell it to start normally.
- Problem does NOT happen when I tell the machine to shutdown fully...only sleep.

The offending driver is slightly out of date: bcmwl6.sys Tue Jul 07 2009. This is a Braoadcom wireless adapter driver. See if you can update this driver through Dell. Also, using Device Manager > Network Adapters , check the driver properties for your wireless card, does it have the option selected for the system to be able to power off the wireless device, under the Power Management tab? Uncheck this option to see if it makes a difference.

I found a thread on this same problem on the Geeks to Go forum. The only solution they found was to disconnect the wireless from the net before entering the sleep mode. It will work; but that is not the solution you want. You might be interesting in reading through that thread: Blue Screen - DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (STOP: x9F) - Geeks to Go Forums. I would like to find a better solution to make your system operate properly. I also found that other laptop brands using the Broadcom wireless adapter have the same problem. You might search the Dell site to see if Dell has a solution.

In looking through the dump for any other clues, I find you have some outdated drivers on your system; some are extremely obsolete. Out of date third party drivers can cause conflicts, memory corruption and crashes. Could any of these be related to your sleep caused crashes? I don't have the answer to that; but let's try to eliminate them as potential BSOD causes.

dfmirage.sys Fri Jan 11 16:03:51 2008 - This driver is badly out of date. Mirage Driver or DemoForge, LLC Mirage Display Driver belongs to the software Mirage Driver by DemoForge, LLC. This sotware is obsolete and not designed for Win 7. You can see if updated software is available or an updated driver is available. If not, uninstall the software and upgrade to software designed for Win 7.

mdmxsdk.sys Wed Oct 05 19:58:05 2005 - An extremely out of date XP driver. It appears to be a diagnostic tool related to your modem, Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI DI5631. Diagnostic Interface DRIVER or Diagnostic Interface x86 Driver or mdmxsdk belongs to the software Diagnostic Interface or Diagnostic Legacy Interface or mdmxsdk or Diagnostic Interface x86 Driver by Conexant (www.conexant.com). If you do not use your modem, the simple fix is to uuse Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. find this driver and rename it from .sys to .bak. Reboot and it will not load. Doing this will break the program the driver is associated with.

PxHelp20.sys Fri Feb 02 16:23:57 2007 - There is no update for this driver; it is obsolete. Sonic CD/DVD driver (used by many different CD/DVD programs) pxHelp20.sys programs
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename PxHlpa64.sys to PxHlpa64.BAK. This will break your CD/DVD program, but can easily be renamed after you have finished troubleshooting.

What is a good trusted site for driver updates? Dell not really useful; it's like they have stopped supporting my machine with driver updates.

Are there any third party driver update sites - that all seem to want to have me install SW on my machine to scan for driver status -that I should rely on?

Generally, we do not recommend third party driver programs. If Dell does not have updates, try the manufacturers' websites, ie Broadcom - Broadcom.com - Downloads & Support; DemoForge, LLC; and Conexant. If that does not work, they you can try a third party program/site.

OK, I might be lost here. Updated perfmon and analytics zip attached.

I've updated the drivers I could, and turned off (switched to .bak) some old ones like for the modem.

I can't find a new driver for the offending one, and cannot seem to install a Broadcom versions of the 57-series Ethernet adapter. Dell is very little help here' Windows 7 (32 bit) says my drivers are up to date

There is no Power Management tab on the wireless driver, nor do I see Power in any of the options/drop downs on the driver.

Computer still behaves the same as when I posted initial thread.

This time I saw something that I did not see before, more obsolete drivers. These are XP drivers and the chances of them working with Win 7 is slim.

I assume your modem is onboard? If so, try to update these through the Dell site. If that does not work, try the Conexant site. If you do not use your modem, you can disable these by navigating to to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. Locate each driver and rename each from .sys to .bak. Reboot and these drivers will not load. It is possible these drivers are interfering with your wireless driver.

There is a chance, however small, that your b57nd60x.sys file is corrupted. You can try downloading and another copy of it, uninstalling your current copy and installing the new copy.

If none of the above suggestion help and if you cannot update b57nd60x.sys, I see three options.

1. Don't use sleep.

2. Purchase a USB wireless adapter compatible with Win 7 and disable the built in adapter.

3. Upgrade to a new laptop.

I am not trying to be cute or mean. I see a hardware driver problem that is causing consistent crashes and all of the dumps show the same, specific cause. If we can't solve the problem with the b57nd60x.sys driver, I only see the three options above. Hopefully, updating or eliminating those 2005 drivers will solve the problem.

Thanks...I did not interpret is as being cute or mean

What's crazy - to me - is that this just started happening. After I wiped the drive, and installed W7 6-8 months ago, the machine worked perfectly. THen I did something, who knows what, and am now having problems.

I am trying some of this info out, and will keep you guys posted. Cannot tell you how much I appreciate the help.

Greg, do you have a restore point to a time before this problem began occupying? If so, you can do a system restore. There is always the option to do another clean install of Windows 7.

- Re: Screenshots of your D-link WLAN driver a couple posts above - yes, that was what I was expecting, but no power management tab at all on my WLAN driver.
- I do not seem to have a restore point available from before the problem started. I think at one point I limited how much space my restore points could consume. It's biting me now.

If I wanted to disable my wireless card before sleeping...do that through device manager?

Finally - I do believe I have updated every offending driver you identified. Can I do one more dump of the logs for you to check and see if there is anything else outdated, at least? If that's not it, I'll rebuild her. Turns out I really like Sleep mode.

You are certainly welcome for the help. That is what we do here.

I think probably since you have a laptop and the adapter is built in, you computer handles its power management not giving you that option.

If I remember what I read in that thread, you disconnect from the internet rather than disable your wireless adapter. You should have an icon in the lower right pertaining to your wireless connection. With Windows 7, it is a vertical bar graph. Left click on that icon and your wireless connection and other available connections should pop up. Left click on your current connection and select Disconnect. You will have to reconnect when you wake your computer up.

Certainly you can upload additional information. Keep in mind that it is harder to determine which drivers are loading if there is no dump file. Maybe getting rid of those 2005 drivers will do the trick - I hope.
