Win7 Profile .bak behaviour

I have a problem with a Windows7 profile, I have seen various pages about how to recover it but they do not seem to work for me, it renames the profile back to a .BAK in the registry

Top 2 Ways to Fix a Corrupted User Profile (Windows 7)

I want to understand more about what causes Windows to rename my profile .BAK in the registry and create a temp profile.

It clearly thinks my profile is corrupt but the event viewer tells me very little.

I have copied off the Windows profile files and I have a clone of Win7 on a backup laptop from about 2 years ago, so I can copy certain reg keys from old to new or vice versa.

I had put my Laptop in sleep mode and it was the next day when the problem occured

My data is not stored in the profile but a lot of important things are stored there.

Normally when I boot up is resumes windows, I then have all the programmes I was running loaded.

If windows did not think the profile was damaged and I terminated the apps from Task Manager Word would remember all the docs I had open, Firefox would remember all the open sites and it has my bookmarks which are in folders and number some 12,000 in a folder structure that makes sense to me.

Programmes like office have all their config settings set just right, so I really want to recover or rebuilt this damaged profile.

I am hoping there is some expert here who can tell me what is it that Windows is checking for that makes it rename the reg key .bak etc

My idea was to try to copy the files and registry to the backup laptop and use it as a test to see if I can mend this.

I did find a great utility online but it can't see my profile even if I rename .bak in registry and make other registry settings, so it is clearly checking something.

Those utils are here

I was hoping I could find some keys from backup Laptop which is a clone of same user to get it working but without overwriting the settings of things like firefox bookmarks, office settings, etc

I can easily copy the profile sub folders and change their permissions, but it is hard to know which profile keys are making it do the whole .bak rename thing etc.

Are there any Profile experts here who can help me, I am not interested in starting over with a clean profile, I have effectively done that but it is killing my productivity.

Hello SevenFan

Are you having difficulties with the instructions posted on the Aomei website. This might be the reason you are still experiencing the problem, even after taking corrective action.

My suggestions are therefore to find and try different instructions. For example you could use the instructions available on Seven Forums : User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

No it was not a problem with their site, instructions on this site are what I did.

The behaviour as outlined in my original post is that it resets it to .BAK because of some other error

I was hoping someone might have some ideas, based on know all the things that are checked by the logon service that rename it .bak.

I would be grateful if anyone else has some advice.

I am still trying to resolve this problem

One thing I noticed was that after I fail to login the Registry settings of the profile at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

The State of the profile changes to 8000 and it is renamed back to .BAK
