Win7 Resinstall = Long Time @ Welcome Screen

I had a virus that redirected me to other sites when I clicked on Google search results. Unable to kill that, I used a Recovery mode to reinstall Win7 using my disk. That went OK, but the time at the Welcome screen has increase dramatically. The time from entering the password to the desktop being ready to go, was about 2 seconds before. Now, it more like 10 - 15. Not long perhaps, but nowhere near as speedy.

I used msconfig for reducing services and start items, but no change at all. That actually surprised me, as there is a fair amount of stuff there. 11 items on Start and a lot more in Services.

I am using a solid state drive which has plenty of space left. I did not do anything to the drive during the Win7 reinstall, but would not expect that to be an issue. All other performances seems mostly normal.

What is going on for those 10 - 15 seconds and what can I do to get my 2 second time back. I admit, I have some other stuff loaded that I did not have before, like some Gigabyte MB stuff from the CD, Comcast Constant Guard, Norton 360, software for the MSI video card. I disabled most of that with msconfig (or so I thought), but to no avail.

Hi Phil -

I would start over, wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command to clear all boot code, then follow these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall which are the same for retail, based on countless thousands we've helped with here.

If after a perfect baseline reinstall you still have the hang then I'd test the hardware, comb the logs and check it over with the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Ultimately if its not resolved you can determine the cause with certainty by Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

Thank you much for this. It is exceptionally helpful. Given my effort put into getting all software reinstalled, my plan is to do exactly as you stated, when I have a time when I don't need to rely on the thing so much.

I am puzzled as to why the boot time is longer now after the reinstall. If anything, you would think it would be same or quicker. Just a question, for which the answer won't change me doing the steps you recommended, but the wait seems odd to me after a new install.

It could be due to not relying on Win7 to provide the drivers in installer and via Windows Updates, instead supplying a bunch of drivers like was done in the XP era but not necessary for Win7. Read the Reinstall tutorial for how drivers are best handled.

It could be due to old boot code remaining on the drive which causes myriad problems resolved by wiping the HD first before reinstall.

It could be a program or other startup interfering, possibly remedied by establishing a Clean boot now as shown in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7, along with the rest of the steps which may provide clues.
