Can someone explain to me why K-Lite codecs have "ruined people's systems"? That got me a bit worried since it's what I currently use.

The actual reason for that is because K-Lite Codec Pack has many codecs that are being installed in our system that we don't really need.

Shark007 Codec Pack only integrate those codecs that we usually need and besides he (Shark007) is hearing all our request and recommending only the best codecs for our system.

Just my .0001 cents. :)

And in addition to that, Sharks packs have really useful and easy to use settings (tweaking) apps (one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit filters), that make it a snap to configure and control which filters and splitters will be used for each specific media file type.

Agreed.

Plus I also like to use AC3 Filter for audio processing whenever possible. And for the player, I'm very happy with MPC-HC x32 for now, and will likely be moving to the x64 version of MPC-HC when CoreAVC 2.0 comes out.

Although unstated, the only prerequisite would be to have installed v215 in its default path.
I will edit the page offering the 216 update with this information.

Thanks, I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it a little confusing because the usual procedure with your apps is to uninstall x64 version b/4 doing anything with the 32 bit version. Also, have never seen you post an update rather than a new version that requires the previous versions to be uninstalled b/4 installing the new version. Nice not to have to uninstall and reinstall to update for a change.

Btw, I subscribed to that thread (with instant email notification activated) in the hopes that this will provide me with notification of future updates.

have never seen you post an update rather than a new version

It is quite common for updates to be posted in that thread. These updates are never sent to the public distribution sites. Sometimes they do not have installers though, just a simple direction to overwrite the existing application with an updated application.

The reason this update has an installer is that it modifies several things that a simple file replacement cannot do. When the update is supplied in an installer, the installed version is also incremented.
(full descriptions of updates are posted along with the update)

If i were to install this codec pack, and uninstall it for another codec pack, Would there still be traces left?

I go to extreme lengths to ensure my users that uninstallation returns your system to a pre-installation environment. There is an empty directory left behind though, \Program Files\Win7codecs - This is the only trace not removed by the uninstaller.

By the way, conventional unistalls are disabled. You cannot remove it from the Programs and Features list of the control panel. I disabled this because I needed to take full control of the uninstall process to do a proper cleanup and reset of all registry keys and values.

The only proper uninstall method is from within the Settings Application,
on the Help TAB; use the UNINSTALL button.

Also know, it doesnt change much upon installation. Most Windows defaults are left in place. So several of your files still may not play properly requiring you to make an adjustment such as choosing a different splitter or in the case of M2TS files, choosing to disable Windows Media Foundation (WMF) on the SWAP TAB.

The settings application is a powerful tool to the installed codecs with several failsafe features built-in such as Reset All or having the setting of one feature auto set or unset other features as required. Explore the settings with confidence that the Reset All button will place you right back to where you started at any time. Once you find a favourable set of settings there is a Save/Restore feature on the MISC TAB that can be used even after a complete uninstall / re-install. This TAB also has several builtin tools such as MediaInfo, a file integrity tester and a DirectShow renderer which will bypass the WMF chain.

If your intent is to use the Microsoft players, I suggest you make your 1st adjustment on the Help TAB
by choosing to associate all newly enabled filetypes to the Windows players.

Lastly, I operate my own forums to assist users with difficult files and playback scenario's.
Most issues you may face are probably solvable using the forums search feature.

i use wmp for all my videos, and the codecs work great. Only thing i havent been able to figure out is why wmp says its unable to play an h264 .mp4 file. Unless i rename it .mkv, then it plays fine.

Edit: got wmp to play the file as an .mp4 by changing the setting for "AAC audio in DirectShow Players" to "Use FFDshow's codec" on the SWAP tab

Shark, is there a page you can link to that shows the "proper" configuration of your codecs for Win7 x64 installations?

There is no such thing as a proper configuration that will meet everyone's needs.

What works for this person, doesnt for that person. My codec releases EMPOWER you to find your own playback niche setup that works for you and also allows you to save that configuration once you figure it out. (Save/Restore settings on the MISC TAB)

You should NOT be having grainy/poor playback.

Often this is the result of a default installation and no exploration of the available settings on the part of the user. I have gone to great lengths to assist users along thier journey of self discovery. A feature you should get familiar with is called Reset All. Explore the possibilities the configuration TABS offer and when you get in to deep, use Reset All. This feature sets all configuration settings back to installation defaults. Keep track of what worked and what didnt.

My releases will solve your issue(s) but on that note, there is no one configuration that will work for everyone. Also, I have not implemented known 'good' settings purposely because research told me that I should NOT touch the system settings by default.

I can suggest to you, open the x64 Settings Application, select FFDshow on the righthand side of the H264 TAB and also go to the SWAP TAB and select FFDshow for everything there except WVC1 and MPEG2. These suggestions will probably correct any poor playback you are currently experiencing.

A couple of handy suggestions:
M2TS files that play without audio, on the SWAP TAB, choose to disable Windows Media Foundation.
And one more for x64 users. Playback of Standalone FLAC audio files in x64 MC. On the Config TAB of the x64 Application, choose to toggle the WMP to x64 and back to 32bit will permanenly enable x64 MC to play standalone FLAC audio.

I have done all of the above, and also tried switching all of the MP4 related codec options around in the 32-bit settings while using your dedicated MPC-HC solution to play an MP4 video (one verified to be great quality in XP) and it was still horrible quality. I tried all of the EVR/VMR settings available for MP4 files and nothing changed at all. I'm at a complete loss anymore.

With the issues you face, as read in several other threads throughout these forums...
I would start with a clean install of the OS,
followed by audio/video driver updates,
and ONLY the shark codecs.

No reg tweaks etc, just the shark codecs.

I've already done exactly that, actually. Clean install (even wrote zero's to the whole drive before hand), only loaded necessary drivers for intel mobo/audio/video (latest drivers from Intel and NVIDIA site), loaded shark007 codecs, and no change.
