What would happen if say you upgraded from 7 to 10 and a few months down the road your hard drive fails and you have to reinstall, would you install 7 first with your original key or 10, but where would you get the key for 10?

Get your own windows 10 ISO built, until they are available for downloads: ESD to ISO - Create Bootable ISO from Windows 10 ESD File - Windows 10 Forums . Then, the rest is still unknown. Either the existing keys will work, or we will get new keys by a registration confirmation process. Whatever, we should be (and we will be) able to do a clean reinstall of 10.

For OEM licenses, it might be a issue if the motherboard is corrupt. But there should not be any hiccup if any other hardware component is removed or replaced.

Surely they are using the license keys as a registration method.

So no matter what key you have, once you have registered it for Windows 10, you should be able to use any installation media for W7 or W8, then upgrade it to 10 and put the key in?

I know OEM is tied to the board, but if they do it the above way the it won't matter anymore as they have seen the key as an activated W10 Key, meaning the key is A) Verified by MS and B) Legitimate for one copy?

To me it's very risky using a Windows 7 key to upgrade to Windows 10.

If their is a problem you could loose a perfectly good Windows 7 key.
It could get caught in WA WA land some where between 7 and 10.

You can always go back to windows 8.1 or windows 7, you just may have to call Microsoft for re-activation and tell them you no longer have windows 10 installed.

Some people may need to call in to activate windows 10 because they might have a problem with a key. I am not going to risk my oemslp install for windows 10 though. Plus, I might have an issue with dell replacing the motherboard under warranty.

Just as an update to one of my posts earlier about Retail licences.

According to this post: Windows 7 retail license upgrade to Windows 10 - Microsoft Community if you're upgrading from a Retail 7 or 8 licence then the free upgrade will also be a retail (upgrade) license and will be transferable.
That's really good news for anyone who owns retail versions and I'll definitely be upgrading (eventually) if that's the case.

Excited for this, have been using the Tech Preview since it's release. Will be a great transition from my Win7 machine. Although I'll still hang onto my Win7 machine

The problem with this is, that there are not enough Gamers compared to the commercial market share... You need to remember that they sell windows to businesses and private groups, not just the home consumers.

However, Whilst W7 is a great bed for gaming, i've had no issues on Windows 8.1 recently. So as it may be a better platform for the moment, Windows 10 is where the gaming industry will shift its focus. Especially with DX12.

Awesome news! I can't wait updating Windows 10!

But I still a little bit worry about the new system. Because I have updated my PC from the 8.0 version to 8.1 version, it brings a lot of problems for me. Such as I cannot connet my Wi-Fi for long time; intalled software cannot run on the Windows 8.1, etc.

But the interface impoved a lot. I love it!

Hope this new guy bring more apps and more easier to use!

Modified windows 7? How one can get it?

There is no legit "gamer edition of windows" available anywhere, for whatever windows version.

Windows 10 is more 'gamer friendly' than Windows 7 as it will feature DirectX 12. I'm a gamer and like W7 and W10 just fine, as do many gamers.

Got a new version of win-7 to be ready if I decide to go win-10 upgrade 76.us for 7 pro 64 bit was the cheapest way to get 10 pro instead of home.
Better than 199.us for win-10 pro
I'll just use my 7 home premium 64 as a dual boot on my new build

Not sure what to do with 8 pro upgrade :/
I may use it for a h-premium upgrading to 8 and 8.1 then to 10 but that is awfully convoluted

I have multiple copies of Windows 7 Pro, 7 Pro N, Ultimate and Ultimate N that is 20 in total plus 2 more Ultimate keys and DVD's which I got by completing training in Windows 7 @ Best Buy all those years ago. Every single one of them is worth far more to me than Windows 8 .1 or 10 would ever be. I use Media center so it is really hard to give up 7 which IS SO GOOD and as I have 2 machines dual booting with 8.1 they are the OS to be upgraded and killed off keys. There is still 5 years left on 7 and I would not be surprised if that does not get extended seeing as many businesses have just upgraded just as XP expired. I use all they keys and a bunch of other versions running a virtual machine of most Microsoft O.S. Why? Because I am a geek and I can fire up Windows 7 Basic to help figure out how to do whatever........

You aren't required to upgrade, are you? I would rather stay on 7 for the foreseeable future (as in, this is it, I'm not getting a new OS, ever). I saw the popup last week and had to go into Task Manager to kill it because there was no exit or "decline" option in the menu. I then deleted the upgrade program from C:\Windows\System32\GWX (which stands for Get Windows X -- the Roman numeral for 10). In fact, I deleted the whole folder (had to use Unlocker to force-delete a catalog file that was giving me an "access denied" message).

Hopefully this stupid thing never pops up on my computer again. Microsoft can take the last good Windows version from my cold, dead hands!

If you upgraded from 7 to 10 and your drive dies, you`d have to start all over again from 7, where would you get the media to install 10 ?

You wouldn`t have it, because you upgraded from 7.
