Windows 7 5.1 surround problems (realtek)

When I look the informations about my last drivers (R2.40), I see it dates to 25/12/09

Is it normal it's not more recent ?

That date is December 25, 2009. Seems pretty recent to me. As of this post, that was only 10 days ago.

Anyone found a solution for this yet!? Pretty damn annoying that there isn't a fix.

I'm on quite an old PC. With Ac'97 audio, got 5.1 creative speakers, that worked with xp, and just fails with windows 7. Works on two speakers, and the rest are just inactive. I've updated drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled.

God i miss surround sound.

Had the same problems as u ppl. I could configure my 5.1 in Control panel but it wouldnt work in desktop and media players (only in games). Tryed various solutions ppl provided here including that dreaded speaker fill but nothing worked EXCEPT the solution tyler2569 provided. Now i have 5.1 sound in desktop and media players and only have a minor issue when playing games (I have to change settings back cause that Db changes make my rear speakers too loud).
Thanks man u saved me.

It works just fine for me without doing anything special. I have a laptop PC and a dektop PC, both with onboard Realtek High Definition Audio.

My laptop is connected to a cheap old Hercules XPS 510 speaker system, which is nearly antique but still more than good enough for me. It's 5.1 surround (6 channels) and has analog inputs (3 stereo mini-jacks) which are plugged into the blue, green and pink ports at the front side of my laptop. The green one can also be used as a mini-optical digital output port if necessary, but I don't have any digital speaker system or amplifier so that means I have to use the green one for both the front left and the front right channel. The blue one and the pink one are auto-sense, in other words: as soon as I plug a cable, the Realtek Sound Manager politely asks me what I want connected to the other end of the cable (Windows XP used to turn that polite question into a rude pop-up, but Windows 7 seems to keep it nice and polite now). So I took the blue one for both the rear left and rear right, and the pink one for both the center and subwoofer.

I set speaker config to 5.1 speakers and I checked the checkboxes for the speakers that I have. I unchecked low frequency management, because my speaker system is full range: its satellite speakers are not, but that doesn't matter because its built-in amplifier had its own low freq crossover circuitry already inside it when it came from the Hercules factory.

I check speaker fill when I listen to stereo music, and I uncheck it when I listen to 5.1 surround sound (if you hover your mouse arrow over speaker fill for a moment, you should see a small rectangle that explains what speaker fill is.......).

In the Standard Format tab, I select 24 bits 192000 Hz Studio Quality. That's it! Studio Quality is pumping into my room. You can verify that it works, by clicking the big play button that's in the speaker config tab, right next to the speaker config that you've selected.

On my desktop PC with Asus P5LD2 mainboard, it works exactly the same with only some exceptions: the green port is also auto-sense and so it can't be used for mini-optical digital output, but there's a separate (full-size) optical output anyhow, and an orange, a black and a grey port as well. So as a matter of fact, before I got my laptop, I was getting 7.1 surround with my 5.1 surround speaker system because I had added my old Panasonic portable radio cassette player to one of the extra ports, which worked brilliantly.

To be honest, the only thing that's actually bothering me righ now is that Windows 7 audio capability is still not allowing me to use my laptop's HDMI audio output to enhance the Realtek's and vice versa. I should be able to use my HDTV's built-in SRS TruSurround XT speaker system in juction with the Realtek's digital output, to get 9.1 surround sound. I've tried with ASIO4ALL and Virtual Audio Cable, so far without any luck.......

This might be abit late to say but, whenever I try install the Realktek HD Audio Codec, it just goes through the installation, but it's really not there. Nothing happens. When i reinstall, Windows Update just searches for an Audio Driver. I've also tried uninstalling and disabling all other Sound Drivers. I'm trying the AC '97 REaltek Driver now, hoping this will even install on my machine :/

Is there a way one of the more experienced users here can talk to realtek about this? I'm starting to think that they don't even know that surround sound doesn't work :/

I sent realtek a letter with detailed description of the problem about a month ago, but with no result. I'm sure I'm not the only one who did.

I'm posting to voice my displeasure over this bullshit. Win 7 has been accessible for at least a year to the dolts who should be making sound drivers and this problem has not been resolved? Fags. For the record I have the same problem as the rest of the realtek folks- ACL885 and all 5.1 speakers work, but nothing from the rear/center in wmp, winamp, etc.

Have been searching for solution for over 12 hours with no avail. I guess we just have to wait for new drivers, because Speaker FIll sounds horrible.

I just switched to Windows 7 Home and noticed right away that I didn't have any sound. I installed the latest Realtek drivers, and after some tweaking based on another user's recommendations, I was finally able to get sound. "Speaker fill" is not a solution, though. Everything used to sound crisp, but in Windows 7, my music sounds completely muddled... to the point where I don't even want to listen to it. This is ridiculous. 17 pages and many driver updates later, there is still no real solution. I feel like my only option is to get a new sound card, which I find kind of absurd since it used to work just fine.

It is time for Realtek to fix that drivers... I'm tired of upmixing with foobar's plugin - ChannelMixer. I want a real 5.1 sound!

Besides, when playing DVD's with stereo sound I can't get 6 channels also, instead I get only 2 channels... I haven't found a solution for this. I have one of the newest Realtek chipset, it is working, why don't they make the proper drivers already?! I'm mad :devil:!

Well after wrestling with the problem for several days the best temporary solution I found is enabling "Room" environment in Realtek Audio Manager -> Sound Effects and enabling proper room correction. It's not proper surround like it was in XP, but better than nothing imo.

Thanx, but I prefer ChannelMixer.

By the way, there are new drivers - 2.41. Don't bother downloading... I'm using Realtek 1200C and nothing changed... Still only stereo sound... It's like the early 90's

Im having this problem also, I have windows 7 set up on my gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L motherboard.
I can set it to 5.1 and do all the tests for each speaker fine, but only the front left & right speakers work in itunes and wmp etc. Center and rear are just dead :(
and 5.1 works in games ...

Frustration......

Wow, this is still going?

Seriously, it seems the best fix for this is to buy a new card. It's not worth all the time, effort, and frustration.

I got one for 22 bucks and it sounds as good as the onboard realtek I used to use.

Speaker and Room fill effects are not a solution.

For 22 dollars I got a new card and also learned a lesson. Don't buy/support Realtek in the future.

Well, i shouldnt have to buy a card. I bought the motherboard, and it supports 5.1. And it works perfectly in xp, so why not 7.

It's not realtek

Just for your info guys it's not realteks fault its Microsoft. One of the most common sound devices out there is realtek. Microsoft should of made shure that the new version of windows worked with it but ONCE AGAIN THEY FAILED. If the code was correct in windows seven then it would work, but like I said once again it's not.

My windows 7 doesnt work right with the rear sound just like all of the rest of you and does microsoft give a crap ./....... NOPE!!! Fix it yourself or basicly blame it on drivers.

I know when i was in school and I turned in a program that had even one error on it I got an F. And we didnt get the opportunity to fail, it was just fix it and turn it back in. It was either make it work or fail, no in between. MICROSOFT FAILS ONCE AGAIN

Personally, I think alot of these problems are being caused by people just not knowing how the thing works. I could be wrong of course, but I have 2 Realteks and both are actually working like a real charm in 5.1 mode. I see people assuming all kinds of things about what Speaker Fill is for, and a while ago I even posted what it's for... right here in this topic. To make matters worse, I even shouldn't have needed to post anything in the first place, because hovering your mouse over the option will bring up a tooltip that says almost exactly what I've posted.

That said, why don't you all just try a fresh install of Windows 7 or run a registry cleaner to see what really helps and what doesn't? I have a total of seven Realtek devices in my home and ironically as it may seem, none of them gave me any trouble with Seven.
