windows 7 64-bit hates WLAN

So after reading countless posts and googling I'll try asking here

I have windows 7 ultimate 64-bit installed, ever since I installed it I have been having problems with my wireless internet, previously I had windows vista ultimate 64-bit installed and there the wireless worked without any problems (good signal too).

Anyway since I installed 7 my internet connection kept disconnecting and when it did work it was unbearably slow.

I've managed to fix this problem.... to a point:
-I replaced the router (WRT54GL) with a WRT160Nv3
-I replaced my wireless adapter (WMP54G) with a WMP600N

this got me 2 bars of connectivity for a week or 2. But now it's back to 1 bar and I get bad disconnections from time to time again too.

It's madness, all the other computers connected to my router have recieved a noticeable increase in signal strength thanks to the new setup so this makes no sense.

I upgraded the firmware on the router to the latest WRT-DD firmware availible.
I have the latest drivers installed for the WMP600N, I removed the program that came with it because it was interferring with windows own WLAN manager.

I have noticed by reading other posts and asking other people that this is a general problem on the 64-bit version, while on the 32-bit version the WLAN system works perfectly....

Using a wire is NOT an option unfortuneatly, so would be really nice if I can solve this.

Oh yes, I also checked under services.msc and the WLAN autoconfig is started and set to automatic

I have a 64 bit version of Windows 7 running on one of my machines, and don't have any problems with a wired connection. I'll try to set it up for wireless (I have a wireless USB connector I think I can get from a friend.)

Hang in there - the folks here have all kinds of rigs, and we'll find a solution - we're Sevenforums.

I have a laptop that is running Win 7 64 bit and exclusively use wifi with no issues. Well, I did have one- at this coffee shop I go to I had issues with it taking a long time to connect and validate. I fixed that by changing my power options on the adapter from "maximum power saving" to "medium power saving".

Apart from that it has been a champ (adapter is Atheros AR9285 and our home router is a 4 year old Linksys WRT54GS).

Not intending to cast doubt on your problems, just want you to know that I don't think it is a Win 7 issue because otherwise I would be bitching too.

What is your Security Type and Encryption Type? I have pretty much the same router (WRT160N) and OS (Ultimate x64). I set the Security Type to WPA2-Personal with the Encryption Type set to TKIP. I notice that I cannot achieve continuous connection if I set encryption to AES. AES is preferable since it gives you higher connection speed (> 100Mbps) but cannot keep consistent connection. Do try and change your wireless setting (Open Network and Sharing Center -> Click on Wireless Connection -> Click Wireless Properties button -> Click/open Security tab) to WPA2-Personal/TKIP and see what happens. Keep us posted.

@madkiwi: Well that is nice to know since then there is hope that is is just some setting somewhere blocking or interfering.

@kwxvii: I don't use ecryption,or security type (I have a unsecured network so to speak), might seem crazy but fear not I have a mac filter enabled and have been working like this for 3 years now without people stealing my bandwidth. Also I don't live in a very busy neighborhood so that could also be contributing.
I do have the SPI firewall enabled

Anyway thanks for the help so far if you need to know any more info just ask I built both my pc and network from scratch so I know pretty much everything about it.

In case you weren't aware, Windows 7 does not work correctly unless it's using some type of wlan security encryption, I believe it's that way by design. You need to go into your router set up page and set up WPA-2 as madkiwi suggested, then create a wireless connection password or it's not going to work like you want.

I'm not sure what SP1 firewall is but you should uninstall it completely, set up your wireless network and make sure it's working right then you can reinstall the firewall at which point it should see your network and adjust it's own settings to work with it.

This does not make a lot of sense, I am sitting in a coffee shop with no encryption whatsoever and my notebook is connecting to a wifi access point with no problems.

didn't help, also i doubted it since I have a laptop with windows 7 32-bit and that has no connectivity troubles.

also uninstalling the spi firewall? that is not an option since it is built into the router firmware.

anybody got other ideas?

I have seen issues with it and it usually seems related to the way it autotunes window size, some routers don't handle it well. You can try disabling Windows Scaling Heurisitics and global autotuning.
