for no known reason, the Network Connections icon (not shortcut .. not Network) appeared on my desktop. I have not tried to put it in Trash ... because it is not a shortcut.

It opens just fine to Network Connections window. Things is, .. I don't want it on the desktop.

Any help is appreciated in advance.

Hello John, :)

Export the two registry keys below as .reg files, and upload them here. I'll be happy to take a look at them to see if this is where the "Nework Connections" desktop icon is coming from. If so, I'll post back with a .reg file that will remove it for you.

Is your computer on a network? Is it possible that someone on another computer accessed your hard drive from their computer, and then copied the icon to your Desktop?

One time I did something like that. I worked on a user's computer, then went back to my office. I remembered that I forgot to delete an icon off of his desktop (something that was useful only when I was working on his computer), so I remotely accessed his hard drive, went into his desktop folder, and deleted the icon, without telling him that I was doing so. He then called me and told me that the icon disappeared from his desktop while he was looking at the screen!

Thank you for the reply. It is on a home network, but only I access any of the machines. Appreciate the reply.

John,

The {992CFFA0-F557-101A-88EC-00DD010CCC48} DWORD in the key below was set to show "Network Connections" on your desktop.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel

Downloading and merging the .reg file below will set the DWORD to 1 to remove it for you.

You may need to refresh F5 the desktop afterwards to apply. If that doesn't do it, then you can log out and in to apply instead.
