Windows 7 Aero issue need help

Just as of recent i've been having a problem with Windows Aero where it basically shuts down due to an error and runs Windows Aero Basic instead until some random time it decides to start working again. I lose transparency, the ability to preview open apps, etc.

A few things i've done are to run the Aero diagnostic tool, use a command prompt in conjunction with sfc /scannow, a system restore to before the error started taking place, and a search using the internet. The results were that the diagnostic tool didn't detect any issues, the integrity of my files were fine with sfc /scannow, the system restore didn't fix anything, and obviously I didn't find any helpful information through internet searching.

On a side note, could this be due to updated graphics card drivers? I had the ATI 11.2 drivers installed and updated them because of a recent game but when I first encountered this problem I did a standard uninstall (complete with the proper restarts) and chose 11.3 instead as I had read those were more stable and didn't come with the DCOM issue in 11.4 and 11.5.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

You updated a driver, your WEI (Windows Experience Index) needs to be refreshed.
Click the start orb at the bottom right of your screen and right-click "Computer and select "Properties."
From there scroll down to your computer's general information and over your WEI score it should say "Your Computer needs to be re-assessed" or something along those lines. Run the re-assessment and you should have Aero back.

Would that cause Windows Aero to crash even if it was working previously and then to re-start?

It just seems to me if Aero was highly dependent on WEI then why let me use the feature at all if I had not refreshed it.

Just seeking some insight. Thanks.

Hi LostSamurai, the driver update may not be at fault but you may have remnants of the ATI drivers causing conflicts with the newer ones. Try this free tool, Driver Sweeper and use it to uninstall your curent ATI drivers.
First though have a copy of the driver saved to reinstall. After running Driver Sweeper, restart and cancel Window's "Installing device driver", then install yours.
The WEI score won't effect Aero performance.

@Britton

Thanks for the suggestion, shortly after my last post I thought i'd give that a try. Just hope if it is conflicting drivers at fault that it won't happen again.

Installed the full 11.2 package and found CCC2 to still be too slow on start-up, so I downloaded the individual package of CCC2 for 11.5 to see if it was any better and it isn't. Went back to the original CCC to improve start-up time. All individual packages of course... Seeing as it primarily deals with MOM.exe and CCC.exe I don't think I should have any issues.

Did proper restarts after each uninstallation and installation... Hope it works fine because I definitely don't want to be forced to do a Windows Repair.

Refreshed WEI as well after the new installation.
