I have 117 GB on HD. I try to backup on an external 160GB HD. External I believe is formatted correctly with share permissions. I also tried without copying the system image. I sometimes get as far as 61% before it freezes forcing me to hardboot. Thanks, Max

Try running
sfc /scannow
from an elevated command prompt.
If you have system file errors you may need to run this more than once.

Posting all the error info may help us give you better suggestions.

I tried to run sfc/scannow from an elevated prompt, but it gave me the message to run in a console session. Sorry, I don't know what that is. The following, I believe is the error. Thanks --- Log Name: System

First off
To open an elevated command prompt
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html
Then type
sfc /scannow
Be patient because it could take awhile.

You should check your internal and external HDDs. You could use the manufacturer's diagnostic tools. Alternatively, you can run the Windows diagnostic described in this tutorial
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

You also need to clarify what sort of backup you are attempting. I assumed it was a system image.
I consider 117 GB on the large side for imaging in a reasonable time. Try putting static data on another partition.
Your destination ext HDD is also on the small side. Have you considered getting a larger ext HDD, say at least 500GB?

Frankly MJF, I'm fed-up. I've wasted way too many hours trying to fix this problem. The error - 0x81000037 was determined by Microsoft Support to be an error with a reparse point. I tried to go the junction files listed in DIR/AL/S to remove them, and the files listed could not be found in my system. Oh, I also ran sfc/scannow as you told me and it said that there were no integrity violations. Max

Further MJF, I don't see the problem downloading 117GB onto a 160GB HD. I don't have 50+ dollars to waste on another HD. Thanks again, Max

We spend many more hours attempting to give FREE advice often to novices who provide little guidance.
You could try different imaging software such as free Macrium Reflect.
Someone else may be prepared to help you.

FREE???? $127.00 for Windows 7 Pro, and I get transparent screens and a bum backup! Ok, back to the problem. The following is what Microsoft Answers sent me today. I had already done them all. Plus some. (You must put up with a lot of crap, MJF!)
Your question on Microsoft Answers has received a reply:
Question
Windows 7 backup freezes at 58%

Hi,
1. Were there any recent changes to the system prior to the issue?
Method 1
We recommend you to cross check if the backup and restore services are started and their status is correct. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Login as an administrator. ClickStart, type ‘services.msc’ and hitEnter.
2. From the list of items, double click onWindows Backup and Volume Shadow Copy services.
3. Set their startup type toAutomatic and start the services.
4. Apply the changes.
Method 2
Run check disk to find and fix errors on the backup drive.
1. ClickStart, type cmd, right click on cmd and click Run as Administrator.
2. On the prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and hitEnter on the keyboard.
3. Try to backup and check the result.
For more information, refer to this link:Check a drive for errors
Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost
Method 3:
Follow the link mentioned below, disable the antivirus and check if you can perform the backup
Disable antivirus software
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software
Note: Make sure you enable the antivirus software once you are done with the troubleshooting.
For more information refer:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-your-files
Let us know if it helps.

Only now and again.

You do realize don't you that:
1) We are not part of Microsoft.
2) We are not paid. ie. we are volunteers.
3) Our motivation is to help people.

So venting against MS here serves little point.
