Windows 7 Boot Issues

Hi Guys, I'm looking for some advice.

Suddenly windows 7 decides not to boot up, it get as far as the splash screen "Starting Windows" but thats it, and theres no orbs that make up the windows logo at all, it just hangs for ages then resets.

I had done nothing before this happened, like I did'nt install any new devices or software and all of my windows updates were all up to date an my PC was running fine.

Now the funny thing is that I can run a spare hard drive running Vista and that works fine, but I have 2 hard drives with windows 7 home 64 bit that ran fine before this happen but they do not work any more? any drive I put in there with Win 7 on it wont run.

All software and hardware is legit.

I've tried running boot cd like hiren boot cd and puppy linux etc, but no good.

If anyone has a idea or knows how to fix this, or know whats causing the issue?.

Hi Archer, the problem is that I forgot to mention is that I cant get into safe mode nor will it fully load windows, before you ask it wont let me format the hard drive or over write it with a fresh OS. I can gain access to the drive via Hiren Live Boot CD but don't know which options to choose, if thats going to fix it "i dont know". I have done all the system and disc check within Hiren Live Boot CD options but it just says the drive has no errors?.

It says the drive is there on start up, but if I have a drive that works and the bad one connected then boot up the good drive "vista" but when I click on my computer to see how many drive are there, its just the good one?.

Just to clarify: Is the Repair Install via the "Upgrade" option available when you "boot" from the Windows DVD?

Try the repair option from a bootable Windows 7 disc if you have one available. If the startup repair option doesn't work, see if you can get to a command prompt using the repair disc. If so, try the following command: bootrec.exe /FixBoot

Nope, does not offer that choice as it hangs and resets.

You're on the right track, except you want the Repair option when booting off the Windows installation DVD.

Then from there try the command prompt option and then the command line I mentioned. There are instructions in the link I provided as well.

I have encountered similar issues myself in the past; and the only way for me to get around it was to boot off the disk and do a repair off the disk instead of trying to boot from windows etc. Hopefully trying to do a repair off the disk will get you headed in the right direction. Is the HD detected when you boot into BIOS setup, using the key given on first screen?

If not then reinstall the HD, replace the cables, or replace the HD.

If so test the HD using maker's HD Diagnostic

Then work through the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start

Hi guys,

Thanks for the help and suggestions so far, but it does'nt get that far to do a fresh install or repair.

I now get the error code "0xc000000e" and I have researched it and done everthing that I can to try and get it to boot to a state where I can get some options on screen to help cure it but to no avail.

Remember when booted normally it hangs forever on the "starting windows" without the orbs loading up.

Cant get into safemode either.

Cant use the DVD/Recovery disc nor the restore disc.

Cant even do a full format on it nor enter CMD line.

Any more ideas on this would be great plz as I am near to seeing how far I can throw these hard drives.

Hi there Guys,

The only way I can Access the bad HD is if I use it as a slave drive, of course I can get the files of it that way but its a ball ache.

When the bad HD is a slave drive I right clicked then properties the tools tab then clicked on the error check icon, it did the full check and read that it had errors and that it repaired them and the drive was usable.

When I booted the bad HD on its own as a master it still remained the same.

When booted in safe mode it only gets as far as listing AVG AV and hangs forever.


Took to images on what I'm facing, also I had the blue screen of death telling me it was a hardware or software issue but I know for a fact it's not.

It may well be AVG AV because its the only bit of software I remmber now that needed updating, so can I remove it completely unistall it from the drive manually when its a slave drive, because thats the only way I can view and change files witnin the HD.

It shows in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start how to use boot disks to disinfect and attempt repairs.

The answer to these steps is not to report back that they dont' work, but tell us why so we can help you get around them to do the repairs like everyone else does.

Are you unable to boot the Win7 disk to confirm the Partition Marked Active and then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times? If not, why not? Have you followed the steps correctly How to Boot A Computer from CD or DVD - YouTube?

If you can slave the HD then scan it with Malwarebytes to assure its not infected as it may not repair until it is cleaned up.

As to the question whether you can delete the AVG crapware while it is slaved, it cannot be uninstalled of course but you can try deleting the AVG folder to make it inert so it doesn't interfere with booting.

But first I would boot the Win7 disk to confirm the active partition and run Startup Repairs 3 times. It should offer to automate System Restore but if not run it from the System Recovery Options.

Failure to be able to boot a disk is almost always user failure. I've already said to reset the BIOS if it won't boot disks, but the fact you don't interact with any of the steps and instead just bleat out that nothing works normally means you're not following them.

Yes the HD is unbootable from the Win 7 DVD, and in fact I reported back from the ideas that were posted back to me, I am not going to excuse your ignorance but thats not your fault.

As the images posted (have a look like most people), it will try and boot from the DVD disc and get as far as saying "loading windows files" then it freezes and stays like that.

With the HD being a slave drive it wont let me scan with any AV that option is grayed out when choosing it.

Like I said before the HD wont boot from the DVD, I am PC competent and fully understand the errors and understand that it's not me at fault as a user.

I just wanted to know if the problem had a fix or work around.

So a big thank you to all that has helped with there ideas and knowledge.

I didn't notice if it was posted or not but did you try doing a complete re format of the drive if it will let you? If it won't let you do anything in terms of formatting, repairing, or doing a repair install off the windows disk; it sounds like it's the hardware itself that is bad. Definitely does not sound like a software issue as if it was you would still be able to load windows to a point possibly

The HD is not bootable from the WIn7 DVD in any case . If you're bluescreening when you attempt to boot the Win7 REpair CD or Installation Media, try another disk from Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start , try F8 System Recovery Options,
try Flash Stick installer boot.

If it persists test your hardware. You'll need to get the Win7 boot disk to boot. What happens when you try to boot into BIOS setup to reset BIOS to defaults?
