This message started appearing suddenly after using this computer for nearly 2 years. It was purchased 2nd hand with Windows 7 Ultimate already installed and did not come with any discs or paperwork. I'm not sure how to run a diagnostic to obtain the kind of reports that I have seen on the forums. Would appreciate any assistance. Thank you!

You have a major problem.
Your machine was manufactured in 2005 - but the Windows 7 Product Key in use is valid only on machines which shipped with Windows 7 installed.

At a guess, I would say that you just got around to installing Service Pack 1?
SP1 was designed to remove and block most of the known Activation Exploits of the day - thereby notifying the users of their counterfeit installs.

It seems that you purchased this machine 'used' with a counterfeit install of Windows 7.
For what version and edition of Windows is it licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case?

The COA sticker on the case is for Windows XP Home Edition. The seller claimed to have loaded a legitimate Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade. Is my only recourse to purchase a license key now (which I cannot afford as I am currently unemployed)?

Either new Full License for Windows 7 Ultimate (the most expensive possible option) or an Upgrade License for whichever edition of Windows 7 you can afford.

The cheapest option is to order a set of XP Recovery disks for your PC from Dell (unless you know someone with a similar machine who has a set?).

Since the machine apparently happily runs Win 7, I'd see what your options are in terms of the Upgrade - Do you really need Ultimate? Do you even need Pro? If Windows 7 Home Premium, or even Home Basic, would do, they are considerably cheaper.

There's also the possibility of upgrading to Windows 8 - which may be a more complex procedure, but may be cheaper if you can do it before they close the upgrade offer later in the month - you'd need to run the Upgrade assistant first to see if your hardware is up to it.

Go to control panel--programs & features--near top left click on installed updates--look for kb971033--highlight this and then click uninstall. Problem solved.
