Solved Windows 7 built in defrag

When using W7 built in defrag what doesn't it defrag or if easier to post, what does it defrag.

defrags File Fragments that are 64M and smaller.

Command Line Options:

Thank you Tepid for the time you spent looking into that. Question; does it do registry. I have Googled and it seams that Microsoft is hiding most information. I think it is Diskeeper but I have no proof of that. I don't have any problems so this is just for information only. I use W7 built in defrag, I just don't know what it is or is not defraging. Thank you again. Good info.

You don't need to defrag the registry.

I use Windows 7 defrag and it works fine for me.

defragment need arises after your system has been used for a long period of time and has been accumulated with loads of data, i think defraging registry is also helpful to tweak up win 7, i did this once with some tool called reginout a few months back ...

Found a bit of Information

It does not defragment files residing in the Recycle Bin or files that are in use.
In particular, this includes the registry, page file and hibernation file.

This gives a overview.

It's important to distinguish between defragging the registry and cleaning it. I would strongly recommend staying away from registry cleaners, however I believe defragging the registry occasionally - once a month would be often enough - is helpful. It will recover some disk space and parse the registry, but you won't notice any difference in performance.

I use Quicksys Regdefrag for Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit without problems.

I use the free Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly after CCleaning Disk and Registry.

Have never had any issue with any of these in hundreds of installs over ten years.

They are the state of the art.

I have had a great experience using the freeware Auslogics Registry Defragger on my x32 Vista computer, but it looks like all of their current x64 software is shareware. I may have to reconsider trying it on my x64 desktop because just like you said once a month it straightened the Vista Registry right out by reducing its size by 10% or so.

I never use registry cleaners of any sort. Had a real bad experience when I tried one and it nuked my XP system a few years ago. Luckily had an external backup image to restore from, otherwise it would have been a royal pain reinstalling all the programs

IIRC, it doesn't defrag some (many?) of the system files, page files, fragments larger than 64 MB (in default mode) and if disk space is low (< 15%) it will have trouble defragging in general.

I've used the Registry cleaner in CCleaner and MV Reg Clean hundereds of times on several instances of Win 2000, Win XP and Win Vista without a single bad experience so I'm wondering what software it was that ravaged your XP system?

There are a bunch of sales operation scam registry cleaners that pop up in web ads that are harmful. They give true genius apps like CCleaner a bad name.

I've also used CCleaner Registry cleaner for ten years now hundreds of times without a single issue. Those who claim it messed up their system usually have another possible cause.

The issue can be settled by simply backing up the Reg files cleaned as offered each time it runs. If an issue arises, merge them back in to see if this is the cause, or if computer won't boot then System Restore from DVD/CD.

Thank you Bill2 that was a great read. I use built in Windows 7 defrag and now I know why.
