How would you know?

If you are not running a virus scanner, how would you know if your infected? Do you think the virus writer will pop up a helpful window telling you? You expecting to see a process called, "virus.exe" or a dir called "malware".

Of course not. Today's malware is written to be stealthy. The biggest sources of new infections aren't file attached to emails, they are drive by downloads on web pages.

So not running a fw and not running av - not a good idea, not good advice to give others.

Using Console version of DrWeb v4.44 and havent' got any problems so far. However got BSODs with the GUI version on Windows 2008... havent' tried it on W7 yet :>

update: just tried GUI version (drweb32w.exe) and everything worked perfectly for the first run, on the second run BSOD occurred. DO NOT USE GUI VERSION!!!

It doesn't like Windows 7 when I tried it a few weeks ago, just rolls back without a real error message,

I tried to install it (SEP) on my W7 and I neither received an error nor have a working client. I am pretty positive it never rolled back either.

confirmed by me power iso works well and antivirus works very well i use kaspersky 8 latest 1 hope that helps a few people

Using ESET Smart Security here, works great. Started with version 3.0.672, moved over to the version 4 beta this morning, so far, so good.

I second that. It's really good.

Avira AntiVir personal edition is working 100%

Maybe there is a small issue with the guard service, but I don't know.

ESET NoD32 no worky...

I am using Avast here as even the latest release of SEP does no work on W7 - it installs, acts like it is installing, and on reboot - it's completely not there.

I could get Avast installed (v4.8.1282 and updated) but I kept getting BSOD with irql_not_less_or_equal on tdx.sys. Uninstalling avast cleared it up so I must assume all is not quite perfect with how they play with (I assume at this point) the network driver.

Yeah, it works fine now for me, but at first the action center kept saying I had to update avast and it was all up to date. Had to do a repair install to make it go away.

My combo: avast + spybot s/d. Seems to cover all the evilware bases. I also had trouble with the action center complaining about avast not being updated, a couple of reboots later, smooth sailing

I'm going to fly without a 'puter condom for a bit. I tried both Kaspersky AV, and avast both with similar issues. Were I a betting man I would suspect the drivers for networking on my Dell nforce4 motherboard board were a bit sensitive to intrusion.

I ditched my Antivirus on the 8th of November 2006 and stopped using software firewalls back in 2004 and I have never regretted it once since

Still not one infection and If I cared about outbound protection I wouldn't have the computer connected to the Internet

I agree, I took out Windows Live OneCare as it wasn't doing anything for me anyways. The firewall has been disabled since .. well, forever and I've never had an issue. Perhaps if you go to malicious websites then you have a problem, but I'm careful . Also "Spot the Virus" is fun
