Problems with Avast & W7 x64

Hey all,

So glad I found this site! Just bought a laptop on the weekend with Vista (blech!) which has freed up my old desktop for trying out W7. Have only just installed it tonight (Australian time) and am already impressed. Loaded so quickly and easily! First up of course is antivirus - I read here some of you are using Avast which made me really happy as it is my app of choice. It claims to work on 64bit systems but I can't get it to install on W7. I get a message saying "An error 1006 (000003EE) has occured" The window has a title of "Setup Selfextract"

Can anyone offer any advise please?

Cheers,

purpleyez

Whilst Comodo Internet Security is well known and works well, it is NOT suitable for W7 if it needs to be installed in Compatibility Mode. AV software is one of those categories that needs to be installed in standard not compatibility mode because of the way in which it needs to patch itself into your system.

Great and good to know but we are talking about running a beta version of W7 so nobody should be using W7 are their primary OS,therefore any AV protection... especially free and well know and trusted... is certainly better that buying a 1 year subscription to any AV app. and wasting your money IMHO ;)
Let us all wait for the RTM and then we can discuss what your primary program should be for AV protection.:D
Cheers

The whole idea of "Beta" is to find out what works and what doesn't. I have been loading all of the programs I normally use on W7, they are working as well (or better) than Vista Ultimate 64

Agreed. Although I am running W7 for the majority of the time, I do have Vista to fall back on should the need arise (although, at the moment I am only booting into them once a week to update them). When W7 RC1 is released, I shall install that in the same partition currently occupied by W7. Incidentally, Kaspersky 8.0.0.1071 is currently working OK fore me in W7.

Great point ;)
We need a compiled list of all the completely- compatible free anti-virus/firewall programs that currently work with W7 without having to use Vista compatibility mode.
That will at least, give all of us a base to build on as to what AV app currently works with W7 with no special install/run requirements.:)
The key word here is free.
Someone with just a little time please review this forum and post a list of the free compatible AV's available. Remember, free only.
We can discuss paid AV apps after final release of W7...agreed???

Both norton n mcafee sucks!
I just switched to avast pro 4.8 n it rocks man.
The user interface is still not decent. But who cares!
We need system security. I'm trying for the 1st time n it's the best.
