Windows 7 Crashing at Random

Hi All,

I just bought a brand new Dell Studio 15 laptop computer running Windows 7 home premium and am getting random crashes. I use the computer 7-10 hours per day and usually get 2-4 crashes per day, for no apparent reason.

Initially I was getting BSOD with bugcode USB Driver errors but this no longer happens. The computer just randomly crashes, however I can't cause the computer to crash. It seems to happen at random.

The only things that are constant when it crashes are I am running Google Chrome and my RDP connecting to my work server.

What I have done so far:

- Updated all drivers. There are no little yellow triangles beside any drivers.

- Run a variety of antivirus and antispyware including ccleaner, advanced system care, super antispyware, malware bytes and my overall virus protection is bitdefender internet security 2011 (paid version).

- Tried maintenance to auto detect and fix problems via Action Centre.

I'm not sure where to go from here. Your help is appreciated :D !!

Here are my full system specs, copied from the file Dell sent me when I bought the computer. Sorry, but I'm not sure what is or is not relevant so I copied everything.

Hi,

For some reason the collection application did not pick up any BSOD minidumps (it does this occasionally). Can you check C:\Windows\Minidump and upload anything you find there.

If there is nothing there and you have definitely got bluescreens then can you check the settings mentioned in this post to see if your system is set up correctly to collect dump files when it Blue Screens.

I did manage to find a bit on a few of your BSODs -

At least part of your problem is USB related - what do you generally have plugged in?

Hi revention

Thanks for the info.

I am no longer getting BSOD, however my computer is still randomly restarting.

Seems that the folder C:\Windows\Minidump is empty so I have followed the instructions in the post you referred to and enabled the minidump.

Re: what do I plug in, I almost always have a Logitech Trackman Wheel mouse plugged in.

I guess it could make sense that this is causing problems and sometimes the mouse stops working (although the fingerpad continues to work) and I have to restart the computer to get the mouse working again.

I have just today downloaded the most recent updates for the mouse so I will see if this makes any difference over the next few days...

Any other suggestions if this doesn't work?

Thanks for your help so far!

More BSODs...

Ok, the new mouse drivers didn't fix the problem.

The last BSOD happened with a keyboard (Wyse ku8933), mouse (logitech trackball T-bb18) and external monitor (NEC Accusync LCD 52v) attached.

Note that I have had BSODs with and without the monitor and keyboard attached. It seems the common denominator is the mouse, however I have just updated the mouse drivers. Could there be another problem?

I have zipped up the files and attached.

Thanks again.

Hi,

We did get a minidump this time -the usbhub.sys driver blamed again. Do you have another mouse you can use?

Try running with zero USB devices plugged in (if possible) and see what happens.

Appreciate your help!!

It just occurred to me that this happens quite regularly when I close the laptop and it goes into hibernate mode, although not only after hibernation.

When I open the laptop again and it comes out of hibernate it is restarting. Then when I get to desktop I says it has recovered from a serious error.

I have read through other forums that Windows 7 has some hibernation problems. Anyway to check if hibernation problems are the cause?

Thanks

No way that I know of, apart from putting it into and taking it out of hibernation a lot and seeing what happens.

Yes, I have noticed myself that hibernate on Win7 can have a few problems, I have disabled it on this system due to strange things happening whenever I resumed from hibernation.

Yeah, it seems to be something that comes up on various forums I've read...I used to have some problems reconnecting to WIFI after hibernation, but that seems to have righted itself.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Cheers
