I am using Windows 7 and when i plug the printer in , it just adds it to the "Unspecified" devices list.I downloaded the drivers , ran them in Vista compatibility mode , and it gets to this "EZ installer" part and then it just says something like make sure that the device is visible or something and then it repeats the same thing after like a half a minute and then it says that the operation has failed.I tried removing the "unspecified device" from device manager and then running the driver installation again but then windows tries automaticly to install it on its own but it fails saying that the driver was not found and at the same point the Ez installer freezes up.

Hi doom562 Welcome to Seven Forums. Are you installing from the device and printers page in contorl panel? Do you click on add printer? Is printer connected to your 7 box or is it network printer?

Thank you for the warm welcome :) Well , i connect the printer ( it is a USB one so if I'm correct , Windows 7 is supposed to automatically install it ) and then a window pops up in the lower right corner saying that it has detected a new device and that it is downloading the drivers . Of course , it fails because it says that Windows cannot find the driver. And when i try to install the driver which i downloaded from the website , the same windows pops up when i am manually installing it , and it again says that no driver was found and at that point , the manually downloaded driver installation freezes up.

doom I see in your post that you set the compatibility mode to vista. Have you tried to set it for xp? Did you have a look at the tut for setting compatibility? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html?ltr=C Right click on the file you downloaded from hp and do the comp.tut. before you do that have a look in programs and features in the cp. If the hp software for your printer is there then uninstall it. then do the tut and run it again. This driver problem can be solved so keep trying. good luck and keep posting results

More specifically - did you get the Host Plug and Play driver? That is the one you'll most likely need for a USB connected printer....

Also, I just tried to add a mock printer and after hitting Windows Update, I found a driver for the 1015, which looks similar to the 1020 (but I don't think has USB capabilities). You could try that to get some basic printer functionality.

Finally, HP also has more up-to-date drivers for the lj 1010 series (1010, 1015, etc) than the 1020/1022 series, so that might be another reason to try the 1015 driver from WU or else the HP lj1010 drivers HP LaserJet 1015 Printer*-* HP LaserJet 1010/1012/1015 Host Based Driver - HP Business Support Center

You migt also look into whether the printer itself needs a firmware update http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...oftwareitem=bi-58677-1&os=2100&product=439320

Hello Doom, I'm also a new OS7 tester and I experienced the same issue.
Luckily I was able to resolve the issue by performing the following operation. (Bear with me as I'm not a tek savvy person)
  • You must remove all HP related software from your system.
  • Use your control Panel/System/Hardware Manager to remove the printer and drivers.
  • Go to the HP support site and look for the device driver for the 1020, ensure that you download the vista 64 device driver for the 1020
  • After downloading the Vista 64 driver you are ready to change the compatability mode.
  • Make sure the printer is NOT connected to your system
  • Find the driver file and right click the file w/your mouse
  • Run the program as administrator
  • Execute the file
  • It will copy to your driver folder
  • Connect your printer to the USB port
  • OS7 will recognize the printer and install it.

I have recently installed Windows 7 and cannot get my HP 1020 Laserjet to work, either.

I wanted to try the solution listed here - but I am nervous about deleting "All HP software" - my computer is an HP!

How do I know what to delete?

Thanks in advance.

When you go to programs and features in your control panel you are just looking for any printer related software. The reason being that you must delete any drivers that you have already tried but did not work for you. Hope this helps. Welcome to Seven Forums reporter20

New here with the same issue. On the "Devices and Printers" control panel, I have my HP Laserjet 1020 in the UNSPECIFIED category. I had this working from the first time I loaded up my computer about 3 months ago until today. I can't get the icon out of the unspecified area or find any other way to purge the driver and retry. Any help would be appreciated. This is not a networked printer: it is just connected to my laptop with a USB cable.

Newbie here. I had a working driver for my Laserjet 1020 for three months sice I first loaded up my computer. This afternoon, the icon in the Devices and Printers control panel moved to the UNSPECIFIED category. I can't remove it or find a way to purge the old drivers so that I can try a fresh driver install. I also have a HP 6110, but it works with no problem. The printer is USB connected right to the computer; no networking. HELP?!

Nope. Can't get at driver remnants

Thanks for your response. I couldn't find a spot where Revo let's you delete a driver except through the normal windows methods. So I still have my printer icon on the Devices and Printers window under "Unspecified" and I can't get rid of it.
