Read the ZDNet article, sounds like blackmail, if Mozilla goes the way Of Google Chrome [only used here for Youtube] might definitely have to go the K-Meleon. On the weekend, fortifying my a-v suite, eventhough as said before, this machine is now just a glorified TV/PVR now. I don't "travel" to strange places any more.

I got rid of those obnoxious, and sometimes harmful, MS Updates, years ago, and likewise MS Office.

Open Office works great for me and what I need to do.


OH, and there is a neat little program for Windows 10, called simply, "stopupdates10setup.exe".
It's become one of my favorite programs that I run when setting up a new install of Windows 10.

Thanks for the tip, I only just paid my share to the guys from work to get a copy of the VL version for W10 Enterprise LTSB [now called LTSC] but can't afford to build a new machine as of yet. So will muggle with this one until third parties stop their support. I get everything else from Majorgeeks and/or John Haller's PortableApps.com, which runs on local drives quite fast until I need to travel so copies to a stick real easy.

I have, starting from 2015. But I still use W7 on the machine in my specs and have no intention of changing that. Having routinely swapped back and forth between the two I hardly notice the differences in the GUI these days, I feel completely at home in both.

Extended Security Updates

I like the idea that there can be a form of security updates for Win7 in the form of a third party service. Is there any chance the members of this forum could get together in something like a group buy, and create a co-op licensed as a business with the intent to supply security services for any Win7 user?

I understand this may not be very straightforward. It might require a group buy for a volume license, and then upgrading all member machines to a new key. This may be required anyways, just to qualify all devices as running Win7 Pro. So a downloadable ISO to upgrade any version of Win7 to Win7 Pro licensed under the business entity?

Failing this, can anyone give advice on how to subscribe to a online service provider who may do something like that?

And at the very least, I don't see why this forum couldn't start a page dedicated to manually finding & fixing any security flaws on our own. I believe there's been many years of advice on how to modify the OS in order to make it more secure

For myself, I've noticed that ever since I've made it SOP to always run Waterfox inside a sandbox, that I've had zero malwares of any sort found on my machine. I have the sandbox set to delete everything each time I close it, and I simply run my browser outside the sandbox whenever I need to update the plugins, being careful to not browse any web page outside of the Mozilla Foundation's control

Before the sandbox, I would have all sorts of trackers & random BS, even though I had practiced not visiting flaky websites like FaceBook, or anything with the word 'free' in it's description

I have a hunch that Win7 and a sandbox, combined with DIY security modding will put Win7 many years into the future without any serious issues

After all, just what exactly is a 'security patch', beyond an automated install of things that we could just do manually on our own?

It's a piece of code that has to be written by specialists who fully understand the base code of windows and the nature of the fault or issue - Microsoft are the only ones with the full base code and they are winding down the support even for those who are willing to pay for the services

Although the members here will continue to support others here as they and we always have, we will not be party to some kind of fraudulent company being set up to circumvent the Microsoft rules and probably National Laws
