Windows 7 Expiration Around the Corner for Build 7100

The proverbial “free ride” is about to come to an end for pre-release copies of Microsoft’s latest iteration of the Windows client. Early adopters still running Windows 7 Build 7100 need to upgrade to the RTM Build 7600 version of the platform as soon as possible. This because Windows 7 RC Build 6.1.7100.0.090421-1700 is only one month away from its expiration deadline.

Just as it is the case for a variety of Microsoft testing development releases, Windows 7 RC Build 7100.0.090421-1700 is time-bombed and will enter its expiration period at the start of the coming month. By mid-2010, Windows 7 RC will be completely expired and will be treated in the same manner as a pirated copies of the operating system, offering customers experiences similar to platform versions that have been detected as non-genuine by the Windows Genuine Advantage antipiracy mechanism, according to Brandon LeBlanc, Windows Communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team.

What the easiest way to tell what build we have?

Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. Type Winver and press ENTER when the box opens.

Or

Start then in the search box type Winver and press ENTER

Either of those wil open a dialog detailing you Windows version.

Typing slmgr.vbs -dlv (type this exactly as shown or copy-paste if unsure) in the search box in the Start Menu (at bottom where it says "Search Programs and Files") will give you a lot more detailed info.

Got it. Mine says Version 6.1 (Build 7600) so I guess I'm good huh?

What does this expiration date mean?

What that says is you've got 152 days till your activation license expires.

That date would be 5 July 2010.

You can rearm once, which should (Probably, but not too sure) give you 30 extra days before the black screen and forced activation systems start up.

I would advise you to upgrade or do a fresh install to a retail version ASAP or at least before 5 July 2010.

Why would my license expiring? Never had that happed before. Are you saying this laptop had a trial Windows 7 OS on it when I bought it? It came with it on it from Ebay. Do I just need to go buy an upgrade? Does it have to be Windows 7 Pro, or can I upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium? I'm real confused.

And what does "rearm" mean?

"Rearm" means an extension of the trial period, accomplished by typing slmgr.vbs -rearm into the start menu search box. This will extend your trial period by 30 days. You have one of those left.

Then you go into limited mode, where the system will force you to upgrade. At that point you can either purchase an upgrade version and do an upgrade install or purchase a full version and do a clean install (recommended).

Either way, back up all your data or move it to a separate hard disk if you have not already done so (external disks preferred) before 05 July 2010.

You should be able to upgrade to Home Premium, but a clean install is always preferred.

This guy probably upgraded the OS to Win7 and then sold the machine, which is why you are stuck with a trial version.

You should complain to EBay if at all possible.

In short words : You bought your PC with RC version ,wich someone ''masked'' as RTM ,not trial. That's it.
You can't upgrade from RC to full version ,you can only make clean install. Of course ,first thing what you have to do is buy your Windows 7. It doesn't matter wich version it is.

Yes!! Backup all your data from system partiton ,get Windows 7 full version and make a clean install. It's the only thing you can do.

Because of RC version still in use ,there is no real WGA check like in XP & Vista yet. Every Windows 7 RC is genuine ,because you can activate as many versions as you want with one RC key. And yours is RC ,even if it says it is 7600 build. It's cracked!!

Take a look at picture of mine ,genuine version when I typed slmgr.vbs -dlv .
As you can see ,there is no expiration date!!

Why would a retail license have 3 rearms remaining. Why owuld you need any rearms?

Because it is the default setting for any version of windows 7... I use 7 Professional from my TechNet subscription and it shows 3 rearms still available...nothing to worry about....
