Windows 7 Feel Faster?

After chaning my performance options in windows 7 I cant help but get the feeling that my windows/programs are more responsive? Didn't think it was possible to notice a diffrence with such a high powerd rig? :shock: What do you think? Try it out? Does it not feel faster? Or am I nutz? :sarc:

I've been using the "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer option" since Day #1 for 7 beta until the present time where everything is piled on and 7 still responds faster then seen with previous versions. The latest system image was 320gb to give you an idea of just how many programs and other things have been added.

Once everything was set on this case early last June I've been pushing the OS without seeing any blue screens and/or hard boots. So far this has been the one OS I've been able to count on daily.

No, your not nutz. We are two steps lower than you are with an i3, and we notice it.

I have tried to get the DW to go "Spartan" with the custom setting, but she likes a little "bling" when she is using our machine so I leave the setting at the first choice, "let win decide"

Any computer is going to run faster when you turn off all of the bells and whistles and graphical features. Even if it's not "really" faster, it will be displayed faster since it's graphically less complicated.

By disabling all those effects, the extra milliseconds gained are definitely noticeable regardless of system resources.

What actually is making it appear faster is the fact there are no animations. If you just turn off the animations you would get the same exact feeling of speed. Those animations make the transition from one state to another smoother and more pleasant. However, they also require extra time.

But you really want to keep Aero on, turn off animations if you cannot wait for the few milliseconds it takes.

In many cases but not all. If you are packing a heavy custom theme with other extras cutting them will likely be more noticable over a system running the basics and plenty of display resources left free.

A system running less memory with a small video card or onboard will benefit from cutting things back in order to tweak Windows a bit. For anyone having display issues disabling things can be a help. Then you trim the fat to get Windows running lean.

Wouldn't that heavy custom theme be the first to go then?

Generally those who go with all the customizations are running higher end systems. If you are running a 1gb, 1.5gb, or even one of the new 2gb video cards you wouldn't be worried so much about a few milliseconds of video memory being used!

Between the present case I have now and the last I would likely notice it somewhat on the last build running the 32bit Windows and 4gb with a 512mb card while this one runs 8gb with a 1gb card on the 64bit Windows.

An older system however running let's say 2gb of memory with a 256mb or 512mb video card should expect to notice it a bit more there.

I have an AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 which has 128 MB dedicated VRAM, the display is a 17" widescreen monitor with a resolution of 1920x1200 at a default DPI of about 96. This screen pushes the card to its limits, not to mention it is limited to the latest version of DirectX 9. I really cannot say I notice any difference one way or the other, both perform just as well on my system.

Now I went though and disabled all the effects and pretty things. See what it was like other then ugly. I then turned everything back on full Aero except for "Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing" turning that off gave the same "feeling" of speed. Windows instantly appeared and disappeared. I didn't do a whole scientific experiment but you get the idea.

The animations themselves are what cause the preconception to be slower.
