Windows 7 file association problem

I am having a problem with the windows 7 file association problem. I recently installed a chess game by the name of Kasparov chess and on the start menu I typed the name Kasparov in order to bring it up on the start menu and I found two shortcuts of the same name. So, I clicked one and a window pop up saying that the windows can't find the specific program for this shortcut, so I manually opened the file browser of that window and associated the shortcut with the Kasparov chess game as its default program and when I click applied, all of the rest of the shortcuts of the other programs and even the programs that I pinned on the start menu also got associated with the Kasparov chess. Any programs shortcut that I clicked, the windows open the Kasparov chess program as its default associated program. I want to undo the default associated program and bring my system back to normal. I tried the windows 7 registry editor in order to find the entry but I don't know which one. Would someone please help me on that one oh yeah! another thing, I've disabled the system restore for safety purpose so no system restores for me now would please someone please help me without saying to reinstall my windows

Just use a system restore to a date and time behind when you configured the association
Very Sorry. Missed that about system restore being disabled. Why people do that I can't imagine!!!

You don't have any way to do a restore, right?
You can try resetting the default file type associations.

It's alright, I solved it with the help of unassoc software. But I've got another challenge for you. I use a lot of registry cleaners and I don't care whether the registry entries are either dangerous or useless I just remove them. So, recently I just did that and now my Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 is damaged. I tried removing all of its entries from the registry editor but still it didn't work. I try to re install it but a window pops up that says please insert the cd in the rom to continue installation or browse to the location where the .msi package is. And because of that I can't run my adobe illustrator, each time I try to run it, it pops an error that says the mvp.dll is missing from the system

Safety purposes? Just wondering why you think disabling system restore is a good thing....

Well the system restore is a good and helpful tool to restore your computer's registry entries which brings your system back to the previous state. I just disable it because it takes a lot of harddisk space but that's all me but my opinion is that you restore your system every time you make any crucial change to your computer like opening any suspicious program that may lead to system instability. By the way I was a joking about disabling system restore is for safety purpose so don't take it personally

wow. I ran into the same problem and googling led me to a solution on this site. I loved the sol'n as it was simple and it worked. Even repied to the 3 yr old post after registration just to express my gratitude (all the while apologizing for reviving such an old thread) and after that just took a peek at the topics in the forum and I see this...exactly the same problem.

It's good that it's resolved but a better and simple solution would have been to do what was suggested in this thread:
