Windows 7 Freeze+Sound Distortion=Automatic Reboot?

Hey all,

I'm having problems with my new(ish) computer. Basically, it's started a strange thing where it suddenly runs slowly, that is, the mouse moves very jerkily and the sound becomes slow and distorted. It then completely freezes for a few seconds and automatically restarts. Usually, after it's done that it doesn't do it again...until the next day or few days after. :/ So far, it's usually happened about half an hour to an hour after turning it on. It also seems to happen even though I'm doing nothing intensive.

I should also mention that windows keeps failing to update itself...and the action centre also fails when I ask it to check for a solution. These are all recent problems. I'm wondering if I got a virus.

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM. I've had this computer for around four weeks. However, it is refurbished and so I believe the actual computer is about 5 months old.

Please start by removing your Norton according to these directions:

Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the Norton from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of Norton using this free tool: KB Article Not Found
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's

If you also have AVG installed, please uninstall it as described above, but use this tool to remove the remnants: AVG - Download tools

DO NOT USE 2 antivirus or firewalls at the same time. They will, at best, just slow down your system - at worst they'll allow malware in.

As such I have to wonder about these 2 entries in your startups:

If this is an infection, stop working on the BSOD stuff and concentrate on removing the infection. Once the system is clean, then we can start cleaning up any Windows problems that may exist.

Thank you very much for your help!

I've done all the steps you suggested regarding the antivirus software. Although I had already removed Norton a couple weeks ago, I guess there was stuff left on, so I was, hopefully, only running one antivirus software program. Now I've used the programs you gave me to get rid of the remaining files and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials from the list and am running that solo.

I believe you're right about having a virus. I accidentally received one recently which came in a download and AVG identified it but didn't do much, so I deleted the zdh.exe and zdi.exe files manually, as well as the temporary internet files. It kept starting up an automatic application in the background, but after being deleted it stopped and AVG no longer found any viruses, so I foolishly thought I'd gotten rid of it. I've disabled the applications in startup for now and that seems to have allowed windows to update for the first time. Security Essentials hasn't picked anything up, but like you say, I'll go and post in the security forum to get rid of it properly.
