Windows 7 Freezes During Boot

You don't need to make it your default driver. If you install Windows 7 on it anew, you will get a boot screen allowing you to select whcih OS to boot from (they wil both be called "Windows 7"), which will also mean whcih drive to boot from.

Better yet, you can disconnect the HDD which you have the OS now (and is causing the issue) and install in the other driver, then boot only with that other driver. You will avoid messing up your boot sector. If everything turns out the same you can wipe the smaller one and we are back to square one. If it solves it, then the larger HDD is the problem.

Beware, my suggestion means you would wipe your secondary HDD clean, so you should only do it if you are not using the data in it. Another option is to create a partition in it and install it there, then you preserve the data. In any case it is advisable to backup everything first.

Well as of now my computer is totally ****ed. I tried switching the small hard drive to the default one and that didn't work so I flopped them back and now I just get a blinking cursor. Gonna take it to get repaired tomorrow and hopefully they can recover my data and then I'll reload windows and this problem will be resolved.

Well I got my computer back, and windows is loaded on another hard drive and it still does it ): Every single morning I turn it on it does it. Can restart a million times in a day and it will be fine. I've given up, just gonna use stand by and hibernation. Hopefully someone out there has a solution and one I HAVE NOT TRIED!!!!!!!

Matt, I tried to research a bit on that problem and here some suggestions (I am hoping other more experienced members chime in, I am not so sure where to look further):
- I can' t find any refernece to StartupRepairOnline. Isn't it StartupRepairOffline?
- It seems that similar behavior has been found to be related to faulty BIOS. Have you updated your BIOS
- Thinking about what changes in teh morning, I thought it could be somehtign not with the computer, but with your connection and I foudn a reference to a ACPI problem and the wake-on-LAN function. Please check if wake-on-LAN is not enabled in the BIOS. Another experience: leave the netwrok cable disconnected during the night and see if it wil present the problem in the morning.

Something I just saw on another post: check (or just replace) your motherboard battery. That is one thing that could be in a different state after sitting for a while versus during the day.

If it is a USB Device. then unplug the device.
Also in you first post he said:I didn't have drivers installed for the intel chipset software and have installed them now. That seem highly strange.
also in another post you say you rolled back from the Win7 default drivers.
that is what (WDDM) drivers are.

PS: your mobo is not win7 compatible. that might be the reason you have had MAJOR PROBLEMS... I'd work at finding Win 7 DRIVERS for you mobo first.

Seems to me you borked your own system. but
1. No driver installed.
2. rolling back to a lower version of some driver.
3. how long does it take for the SHUTDOWN.
4. what type of HDDs are they.

First off I love your terminology. Secondly I did not 'borke' my computer. All my drivers are up to date as of now but weren't when I originally made this thread. I figured since some of them weren't up to date that maybe thats why the boot screen is crashing. Maybe the drivers weren't windows 7 compatible. The video card is now up to date but I was originally using the WDDM driver for it. Now what seems 'highly strange'? That my Intel Chipset Software wasn't up to date, well apparently not according to Driver Max.

Shutdown when it works properly takes about 10 seconds.
My hard drives are both Sata 5400 RPM hard drives.

2n I never said you borked your computer. I said you probably have borked ISO.
3d Intel is very SHI******y on drivers... Check there site. almost nothing is Win 7 Ready.
4th your MOBO is not win7 compliant - there for you will have more than major problems with mobo drivers. (This is not your problem except you bought something that uses INTEL CRAP. )
5th. and you have stated that you can not do SFC /Scannow from the cmd prompt...(BORKED install or your ISO is BORKED.)

I have been doing computer since 1983, had my own business, still do them today. and 1st things FIRST. If you can not do 1. below. then we ned to fix that.
1. orb -> cmd (right click run as admin) SFC /scannow

If you can not do this; then what ERROR does it give you.
You game lets go.

Well I have my computer back and have factory re-installed vista. I didn't want to go down that route but I have to if I want my computer to work correctly. Windows 7 is an amazing OS and I can't wait to use it when I get my laptop in a few weeks. But this computer just can't run it without the screen freezing. SO I GIVE UP!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS.

Good job Matt, thanks for coming back to sharing your results! It was not a ghost in teh machine in the end! That was the only explanation I had left...
Can you share your video card model / specs etc, so others with the same problem might benefit?

This is a HP PAVILION M9000t. A VISTA Media Center PC. Well apparently the TV Tuner card is faulty with Windows 7.

The ViXS PureTV-U TV Tuner was CAUSING THIS, so if you have that Tuner chances are you'll experience issues with Windows 7. I also have the NVIDIA 8400 GS Video Card.

Hopefully this will help the next person who has a similar issues. I dealt with this issue since May of 2009 ever since I installed the RC. The TV tuner was extremely HOT when I physically removed, it probably was no good anymore.

Frustration was why I bailed. But my PC is currently running beautifully with Windows 7 Ultimate.
