I haven't been using this harddrive from my broken laptop for a few years now. I loaded the harddrive on my other Laptop and after loading, it is assuming my copy of Windows is not geniue. Now I have used it for a while now and it was genuine. For more information, I didn't change my product key.

Hi Luigim1,

That lappy is sat in notification mode at the moment.

I suspect it will turn non-genuine,
It has a Lenovo 2717ATU motherboard, but with a Toshiba product key.
Using a different HDD will not have changed the above. It could only have been done using an exploit
from what i can find that comp only came with XP

So its a non-genuine install.
And is why SP1 has failed to install

So I am assuming that it will not be genuine if its running on a different motherboard? And yes, the other laptop came with Windows XP x32 SP3.

Using a different HDD will not have changed the above. It could only have been done using an exploit
I didn't understand what you meant there, could you please specify more detail for me?

It's a old Lenovo PC with upgraded ram and Windows XP.
When the motherboard was made in Lenovo's factory that companies activation key was placed on it.
Toshiba do the same, the keys are different, the only way to change them is to use an exploit.

You can swap Hard disk drives in/out of computers as you have done, so have i upgraded from the original to an SSD, This does NOT affect or change the Companies, lenovo/Toshiba in your case, key placed on the computer during manufacture

A specific exploit (hack) is needed to change the key

Yes i believe it will become non-genune.

The report you posted is for the Lenovo, which came with XP

From your log:

Windows License Type: OEM SLP

OEM or pre-installed versions are tied to the machine they came with and cannot be installed anywhere else.

If you want to install Win7 then you will need a genuine unused retail DVD.

For one example of prices, my favorite place, Altex Electronics in Austin TX, sells both OEM and retail [Micrososft] Windows 7 Professional for $170 [OEM] and $200 for MS retail. I read elsewhere that Newegg is a very good place for available Windows 7 packages.

Ah I see, the Windows 7 key is specially for the broken Toshiba laptop, which explains why it constantly complains "not genuine" on other systems not Toshiba.

Apparently for me the only solution is to just buy a new Windows 7 keycode.

Almost.

It's nothing to do with it being Toshiba, that's just a bit of local branding, it's a copy which is tied to a specific machine and as such cannot be installed on anything else.

A Windows key won't help you either because it won't work with an OEM pre-installed version, as I said before you need genuine unused retail copy.

There is one other option and that is if you still have XP on the machine, or have a retail XP install disk, you could buy an upgrade.

Upgrades are no longer officially available, or are full installs, any legitimate stock you will see for sale will be New - Old stock, and is getting more limited by the day.

Microsoft are still supplying some new stock but this is only to Corporate clients with special deals and ongoing premium support agreements. The major OEMs are also only allowed to supply under these same limitations. Here in the UK the actual number of available old stock of Windows 7 OEM is getting very scarce.

Strangely enough I have seen refurbished hardware complete with Windows 7 installed available for less that the price of installation media with a legal Key, This hardware is of course from a few years ago and the licences are OEM SLP so can only be used on the hardware they are supplied on.

The possibility of finding a legitimate Windows 7 Disk and key, (never trust a sale of a key alone), are now slight at best here - The US always was a larger market, so should last longer but I expect that the demands of that larger market may mean the available copies may not last for much longer.

I would not be surprised to see the selling price of a Legitimate copy of Windows 7 and unused key to rise higher than modern low end laptops complete with Windows 10 installed, in the next few months

One other thing to be aware of ... Microsoft's genuine licence checks do not always kick in until 30-60 days after initial activation and by then any warranty promises, from online auction sellers will likely be out of validity - Stck with a Mom & Pop Type Bricks & Mortar stores, they're more likely to have legitimate old stock

Leaked corporate versions which need no activation have been freely available almost for as long as the OS has, and still are, which poses an interesting conundrum:

Once an OS has been withdrawn from sale and is officially obsolete can it really be said to be wrong to obtain and use a copy of it, who is disadvantaged or suffers a loss of revenue ?

Two wrongs do not make a right of course but in the light of the disreputable machinations MS got up to in their relentless push to force 10 on a largely unwilling customer base who were perfectly content with 7 (or even 8 would you believe but then it takes all sorts !) they are not without some responsibility if people do choose that course.

Please check our forum rules, the one regarding discussing piracy and other breeches of intellectual copyright is enforced quite strictly ;)

Theft is theft, just because they disagree with a store charging too much for an antique clock does not give someone the right to break in and steal it.
