Security .. Security .. and did I mention Security... Most of the members here are very security conscience and shouldnt have any problems... however the average user knows didly about the subject. Microsoft's security model is quite frankly a joke, but its slowly getting better. Comming from a Linux background, I can tell you that modularity is the way to go.... I wont debate the virtues of one OS over the other, but do a search for windows viruses and linux viruses and then decide if a linux type kernal is needed. Oh and dont go to the market share argument..that dog wont hunt. :D

funny that she used McAfee and holds that against MS. She should have a good AVP, like Kaspersky and it removes everything malicious.
And Apple doesn't have viruses? the only reason they have fewer viruses is because of their unimportance. It's like "my Chrysler is better protected against theft than a Honda because it is such a POS that no one would want it". And they do have viruses, but no AVP.. so they are completely vulnerable if attacked.

Apple just works. that is correct. However, it doesn't have any use for things that computers were originally intended for:
- no professional software beyond Adobe products (no CAD, no engineering software...)
- no games
- no compatible Office program (the first thing the people who hate MS do when they buy a Mac is installing MS Office:-)
- no choice of hardware

It's like building the perfect car that gets 100 mpg and cost $ 100,000... but you can't drive in rain or at night or in winter or when it is hot.

If MS would sell an OS only with it's own overpriced hardware and would only let users browse the internet and draw pictures I'm sure it would be very stable, fast and easy to use.

Well W7 is very easy to use, stable and fast despite the ability to use productivity software. And so was XP.

Now you hit a sixer against Mac, e want persons like u....:p

accolon: Inserted my comments in bold. if you are happy with the Mac, that is fine. Is it overpriced? in my opinion yes. But some people drive a Lexus even if it only is a fancy Toyota. I'm sure my PC case is more than I really need. you have soem good reasons for yourself to use a Mac (I'm sure a PC would fulfill most of the needs as well, though). I'm glad you used valid arguments and not the Apple brainwash commercials.

the thing that really ticks me about Apple are:
- their commercials that don't even explain what a Mac can do, but only pun on windows. Lowest level in my opinion. Like in elections when the only argument candidate A has is how bad candidate B is.
- the claims about viruses etc. there is no evidence a PC is less safe. MS does a great job patching security problems for free for 5 years (10 for businesses), there are AVP, firewalls etc. I'm not sure about Apple's patch policy, but I'm sure their AVPs are less advanced if any
- their claim about windows crashing. I think since XP that is the past. If something crashes, then because of some bad software. But that comes with the larger software choice to begin with. Also the wider choice of hardware brings more issues without holding choice against MS
- their claim that MS is evil: at least MS only sells me an OS, and doesn't force their hardware on me. MS gets sued for including a browser (that is free in all cases to begin with!), but Apple can include all their productivity software and hardware?
- their claim that PCs are slow. Do you know how fast i can run an energy simulation... well, and Apple can't run it at all. So the PC is faster in that case :D

Im :D that we have so many intelligent Windows Guys on our side
Im Definitely with Windows and Linux and in no way with MAC
and to the original question:
Can Apple or Google Tarnish?
Not in this life or if MS gets solds out to Google or Apple :roflmao:

It is funny but many MAC users have installed windows 7 on their machines. For exsample my brother who is hard core mac user yesterday spend whole day on windows 7 playing games :D even working on some program that are only available for windows. he turn his OSX only when he is downloading something. I guess the gaiming will force mac users to install win and to use it ... :devil2::roflmao:

...Btw, I don't think "games" are one the things "a computer was originally intended for"...
It took me a while to read through this thread, lacking, as it does, any relevance. From Living Internet...

"Also in 1969, based on their experience with CTSS and the inefficient but functional MULTICS, Thompson led the design of a new operating system in a series of sessions with Ritchie and Rudd Canaday. Thompson wrote a simulation of the file system and the paging system on MULTICS to verify its operation.

During the same period, Thompson wrote a game on MULTICS called Space Travel that enabled a pilot to fly a ship around a simulation of the solar system and land on the planets and moons. When their access to MULTICS wound down, Thompson translated the game into FORTRAN on the GECOS operating system on a GE-635 computer. However, the display movement was jerky, and access to GECOS cost $75 an hour, so eventually Thompson found a little-used PDP-7 computer with a good display processor at Bell Labs. Thompson and Ritchie then ported Space Travel to the PDP-7's assembly language using a cross-assembler running on GECOS, and then transferred the program to the PDP-7 using punched paper tapes.

After learning how to program the PDP-7, Thompson, Ritchie, Ossanna, and Canaday began to program the operating system that was designed earlier. After writing the file system and a set of basic utilities, they wrote a PDP-7 assembler so they could program directly on the PDP. By 1970, the basic elements of the operating system were in place, but since it could only support one user, Brian Kernighan jokingly named it the Uniplexed Information and Computing System (UNICS) as a pun on MULTICS. When multiprocessing functionality was added a short time later, the name was changed to "Unix", which is now just a name and not an acronym for anything...."

If not for a game, UNICS development would not have continued once funding was dropped. Games have always been, and will likely always be, of fundamental importance to boys, with or without toys.

Antman, you are incredible.

You would be even incredibler if you could provide a link to the game - does it work on directx11?

I though I would be able to avoid this thread. Oh, well.

I think you're confusing self expression and individuality with image, which is the complete opposite of Mac's image devoid of individuality.
That's an impressive thought, I think ... at least I like it a lot :).

Btw, I don't think "games" are one the things "a computer was originally intended for".
If I may (happily) contradict you here, the foremost PC of the 80s by far (in implementation, not in sales), the Amiga, WAS a gaming PC inherently by design. The graphics co-processor with multiple hardware-based screen image buffers and hardware-based multiple cursors were not there to help implement Lotus 1-2-3. This thing had an OS that was totally object-oriented in its implementation, and an outstanding (for the time) windowing UI rightly named Intuition. The king is dead, long live the ...

OK, OK, I'm going ... HEY! Let go of me! ... You have NO right to ...:mad:
