Windows 7 Home Premium OEM install on new HD on Vista Laptop

Haven't you got a copy win 7 you can move to a new pc - ( I am guessing it is for a new pc )

Not moving to a new pc. Had to replace a failed HDD on my old system and reinstalling Win7 from my restore disks has been unsuccessful. Although, now that I think about it, purchasing a retail copy may not work either (unless its Win7 Sp1).

In what way was reinstalling from your restore disks unsuccessful?

kept receiving the error, "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware" so I forced the installation through using
Shift F10
>Cd..
>Cd..
>Cd c:\windows\system32\oobe
>Msoobe

But then was unable to get any win7 updates.

The new drive I installed is AF. From what I've been reading, installing Win7 (pre Sp1) on an AF drive can and often does result in the same error I'm receiving using my recovery disks "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware". So if the problem IS being caused by the HDD being AF, I'll likely receive the same error with a retail copy of Win7 (pre-Sp1). Win7 SP1 apparently addresses the error caused when moving from an old HDD to a newer AF drive.

You can try downloading a genuine ISO with SP1 and use your Pre-SP1 key.

Curious about one thing though... Since my comp came with Win7 preloaded, will the product key on my COA sticker work during activation? I remember reading somewhere that the key that comes w/a Win7 DVD is somehow different from the key on a preinstalled system. Not 100% about this but I recall reading something to that effect.

The COA key will work with the genuine ISO. You probably read about the OEM SLP key. You may need to undergo Phone Activation when using the COA key for the first time.

And to answer your question, you can check the validity of your ISO via their MD5 or SHA1 to ensure they have not been corrupted or tampered with.

Okay great....Already downloaded the links and burned the x64 ISO to dvd, (not sure I need the x32)... Any suggestions for ISO to Flash programs? I'd like to have both optical & flash options available.

Yes, I definitely will... Torchwood is currently helping me resolve the update issues and other errors i'm having, so I may not need to reinstall. It's still good to have the ISO though, because if/when I do reinstall Win7, I'll use the ISO to avoid the bloatware from my restore disks.
