Windows 7 Home Premium: Please help...Programs Will Not Update

Hi everyone.

For the past couple months I've noticed something odd on my PC. Programs that need updating (Windows, nVidia, MSE, etc.) will not download any updates. I click the update buttons in these programs and it starts the progress bar, but then after a few minutes it says it cannot download any updates. I don't have the firewall on and I don't have any aggressive settings in browsers or Windows. I've ran a couple tools - Microsoft EasyFix, Windows Update Diagnostic - but still the problem persists.

I've never had any issues getting updates with my programs before so I'm curious what the issue could be. I thought I would ask the WinExperts here about this, because you guys have always been very helpful in the past with my other PC issues.

This problem just gets stranger every day, so any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
You might fill in your system spec's page and add which security you ever had on this machine and how long you've had MSE as security.

Can you download and install NVidia drivers and install it manually ?

Have you verified these updates are installed ?

Have you tried clean boot ?
Use Clean boot,

Click Start and type in the search box,
msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,

Hi Thrash. Thanks for the reply.

Filled in some specs for my PC. Not sure what all you need to be helpful, but I filled in as much as I could. I've had MSE for about a year. I can't get the nVidia drivers to install, manually or otherwise. . However I did get Windows Updates to install last night.

Have you ran a scan with mbam and scanned for rootkits yet ?
Scan/ Custom scan/ Configure scan and check all partitions...

Yes, I believe so. I posted the MB scan results as a text file in the other thread. I can run another scan if you want me to, but it will have to be later tonight when I get home from work.

That was just a little threat scan but rootkit was selected :/
I'd repeat doing a custom full scan personally.

This morning I tried running the nVidia updater again. First I got a runtime error and the thing closed. Second time the geforce experince screen opened and tried downloading the update but it said it could not connect to the nVidia servers.

how do you create the new user account (and delete the old one)?

You don't delete the old account just change it to a standard user but that is after seeing if the new admin account functions well.

Completely your choice but Avast free is highly used a regarded around here
I personally use Panda free but anything but MSE is an improvement especially after all the windows updating problems this past year.
I used MSE for years and I just could not use it anymore with all the update issues it and the update system in general were popping up all over the place it made no sense to rely on MSE anymore.

MSE is the slowest scanner ever developed and that I know of has never found anything and if it ever did some where it is never able to remove what it found.

When the MSE scan is done and I have the results, then I'll get Avast and run that one, too. We'll see how they compare. When I'm installing Avast do I need everything in the checklist (the list under customize installation)?

Just make sure you uninstall MSE if you install Avast in uninstall a program and also use this

It is also a good thing to do to disable windows defender
Installing Avast should do that for you but it should be confirmed as disabled

So I should completely uninstall MSE before I do anything with Avast? MSE isn't one of those programs where you need some special cleaner file to get rid of it all, is it?

Read and uncheck any piggy back features Avast installer want to install with it
It has become quite bloated
They actually came out with a browser so use the custom install uncheck any toolbars or search engines...
