Windows 7 installation crashes computer at 56% device setup

Lenovo Thinkcentre m55e 9645 j6u, with a core 2 duo e6600, 4gb ddr2 800mhz ram

Trying to install windows 7 (home premium, ultimate, x86, x64, any flavor of it...)

Every time I try to install it, it shuts the computer down at 56% in the "setting up your devices" part.

At which point when it restarts it tells me to install it again because the computer shut down unexpectedly.

Bad motherboard?

What license do you own for Win7? All of them? :huh:

Try entering Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation to disable erroring devices until after install completes, then immediately enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) and install all Important and Optional Windows Updates, with reboots, until there are no more offered when you go back to Check for Updates. You'll get most drivers and important patches this way. Be sure to install them all (except Bing) especially KB971033.

Hmm looking at this seems it will only support a 32bit system Detailed specifications - ThinkCentre M55e (type 9642, 9644, 9645)

My instincts are telling me there is something wrong with either the board or the drive.

You say also you are trying all flavours of Windows now that must be quite expensive how are you doing that?? - retail or OEM? as that machine originally came with XP as you can see.

I own a Home Premium OEM CD and key with unlimited installations. I have a boot CD with just about every other windows 7 installation type for both x86 and x64 for further testing purposes and ease of installation (better one cd with all installations than 10 CD's with one each). If I get a key for a certain installation for a system, I'll just use the one CD.

Ok I didn't know there was such a thing as unlimited installations even the corporate types I know the gov department I work for has to pay for a licence for each machine they put Windows on so I guess you are lucky.

Hmm. I decided to go ahead and try a Windows 8 installation (8.1 to be specific, 8.1 base version x64).

And, it installed with no issues. All of the on-board devices work just fine too...

Consider me befuddled...

Well if you want the 7 look Classic Shell is the program I run on my two 8 machines

Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements it gives you a shell for the Start button but it can be change with the Windows orb with a bit of fiddling
