Windows 7 Installation on Old Sony PCG-NV170

Hey Guys,

I have an old Sony Vaio PCG-NV170 that I want to install Windows 7 on. I recently upgraded the RAM to 512MB (to make it possible to install 7) and have been successful at putting 7 on a few old laptops. I had a question about a possible driver issue. The laptop in question uses an alps touchpad with the hardware ID sny9001. When I ran the Windows 7 Compatibility program, it showed that there were "known issues" with the driver. Now my question is if anyone knows if the touchpad will work. I'm worried that it might be unresponsive and I currently don't have a USB mouse with me, so I want to make sure. Because of that I won't be able to download a driver after installation if it doesn't work.

AFAIK there are 32 bit Windows 7 drivers available here ALPS Touch Pad Driver Software Informer: Latest version download, news and info about this ALPS ELECTRIC CO., LTD program. I'm using them with success on a near 6 y/o XPS Gen 1 DELL running Windows 7 Pro 32

Thank you for the link. My question is if Windows 7 includes drivers by default upon installation that work with the alps touch pad. When you first installed it did it work right away or did you have to install the above driver?

Did not work with Windows 7 Drivers and only did work when I did an update driver and pointed it to where the Alps Drivers were on my hard drive. Synaptics and Alps both had this issue.

I see, thanks. I know this is stretching it, but would it be possible to install the drivers without the aid of a USB mouse? I wanted to install Windows 7 on a friends laptop and he doesn't have one. Remote access maybe?

Having come from the days before there was a mouse we used keyboard keys to do what the mouse later became available to do, these keys still work today, if you are not familiar with them take a look at: Keyboard shortcuts instead of mouse
