Hi,

I got a new computer about 4 weeks ago, and have had no problems up until last night. I left my computer on to go to a concert and everything was fine, and I come home to find that my desktop turned black, and said "This copy of Windows 7 is not Genuine.", and "You may have a counterfeited version of Windows.". Since then, I tried a System Restore, which did not work, and attempted to change it via the control panel (I have a product key on the side of my computer on a sticker) which gave me an error. I've been reading on this issue, and seems that I may have to call Microsoft Support to resolve this.

EDIT: I searched the error code, and found a fix for the error code that was preventing me from fixing it in the control panel. I then tried to change it and it worked.

Let's try an easy fix first - it sometimes works.....

Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

first time I have ever had such good fortune trying a fix.

Did the job

:)
Worked perfectly, however it was interesting the Software Protection Service (sppsrv) was not running. I should have checked first and I now wonder if being disabled was part of the problem. Now the sppsrv settings are to default (Auto delayed) and verified in task manager as running.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Really thought re-registering the authorization worked but it is back. I will post a solution if I find one.

Try this - it's a common problem currently - caused by a botched update last week...

What AV are you using?
Please disable real-time scanning/protection and reboot

If the notification has disappeared, re-enable real-time scanning and reboot again

If the notification is still present, first check whether the real-time scanning is still switched off If so, then re-enable it and post the result. If it's turned itself back on then tell me or try again using a different disable option.

Post back with the results

Microsoft blew it

Being a bit frustrated I called MS to take advantage of the activation tech team (a free service). A lady logged on to my machine and after 30 minutes of doing really stupid stuff she rendered my machine unusable.
I must admit it was a bit funny watching her do silly stuff. That is funny right up untill she killed it. The lesson I learned is to keep a recent backup image. Mine was almost two years old so I had to suffer through 197 updates over three reboots.
