I am running the 64 bit RC version of W7. I will get the full version but according to MS, this RC should be having problems until March 1, 2010, however, I am experiencing problems right now that did not happen until recently.

The problem that I am experiencing is for no reason at all I lose control of the computer momentarily. I can be typing something then BAM, it disconnects the active window and I hear a tone each time I hit a key. Sometimes I'm in a full screen game and that is worse because I have to activate the task manager just to press the windows key + enter to reconnect/activate the game. Has anybody else experienced this? Any ideas, other than buying the full version of W7, that I can do?

I'll bet you have a driver problem, perhaps caused by a tweak you did or an application that you installed. Exactly what does "disconnects the active window" mean? When did this start, and what did you install/remove/update before it started happening?

I said that it is hard to explain. My window losses focus as in if you have multiple windows open and none of them are active. For no reason at all I can be typing or playing a game and the window becomes inactive. I haven't installed anything new. it started to happen first while I was playing Dungeons & Dragons Online. I was in-game and the game became inactive just like I described. I was able to play DDO for a while with no problems before this problem started to occur. The only thing that I started doing different in the game is use the right mouse button simultaniously with the left mouse button and the Keyboard.

Run a full system scan with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware in safe mode after updating. Then try sfc /scannow. Finally update all your drivers, you can use the guide in my sig for extra details.

MalwareBytes (The free version is good enough for your purposes).

sfc /scannow tutorial.

Also you might try system restore, restoring to a time before this behavior manifested iteself.

And finally, if all else has failed, there's a good chance a repair install might fix it and it leaves your programs, data and most settings in place.

Same Issue....

I am having the same problem. I will get it if I am typing in a Yahoo IM box, if I am playing Halo 2, it will minimize it to the taskbar. It does the same with Wolfenstein 2009. I play DDO also, and have to play it in windowed mode so I can easily click on the game to get back into the action. I am trying the malware link that was supplied earlier, and seeing where that goes. I looked into the sfc thing, but not able to get it there due to when I kick up the command prompt, I am in c:\users\john and can not get get to the system32 folder to do start. All drivers seem to be up to date as far as I can tell. Will keep you informed.

sfc /scannow needs to be run in an administrator's command prompt, type cmd in the start menu, then right click and select run as administrator or press Ctrl+Shift+Enter at once.

Do you have the RC version as well? If you do I think it is a deliberate sabotage. I tried the sfc thing in admin and it found nothing wrong. I have recently purchased a copy of W7 from my college bookstore and I am going to see if the problem goes away.

Okay. After a couple of days of doing everything in the list....I have slowed it down. It was at 15 min or so intervals, now it seems to be about an hour or so. Much more manageable, but I still have the issue. The malware scan did find something. I took a screenshot and will upload with this post. I did the sfc scan. I also took the liberty of doing a scan disk, and scanned with windows defender (which was off after the upgrade to 7 from Vista). Nothing else has come up. So, I might be looking at the repair install after all. But I want to keep digging and see if we can find it instead of doing a blanket fix.,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoActiveDesktopChanges (Hijack.DisplayProperties) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Turns out was a false positive by the malware software according to their forums. Back to square one. I don't have a restore point that goes back as far as the problem goes. Atleast I am pretty sure I don't because I know the problem is about 2 weeks old and my last restore point is about a week old. One of the times I wish I had not cleaned them out to save hard drive space......

So, in the morning I shall start a repair install I guess. Now, I will say I changed the "whitelisted" item above back and removed the malware software.

Personally,. I would delete the NoActiveDesktopChanges

That will give you right-click functionality on the desktop.

Deleting the NoActiveDesktopChanges was a mistake as it shut down the right click function and not enable it. All drivers were good to go and none of the scans found a thing. Period. I ended up backing up all the files/music/and other things to my external and did a factory restore. From there, as soon as it was completely up and running, I upgraded it from factory Vista to Windows 7. I have all my programs reinstalled(all Live, Yahoo msg, Itunes, Office) ex for Wolfenstein 09, Halo 2, and DDO. I am not reinstalling DDO. I think something in there some where had is screwed up. I will say that I found on another forum window7 Keeps going out of fullscreen mode

that turns out it may have been AVG. However, I got AVG running now without a hitch. Perhaps it was 8.5 they had issues with, but I had 9.0 from the start on Win 7. The actual problem will never be found on my machine cause it has been wiped completely away.

Something is wrong there, deleted the NoActiveDesktop changes should allow you to right-click on the desktop.

Did you reboot?

Yes, I rebooted like a brazillian time (thats a alot)!!!! After the noactivedesktopchanges was taken out, I could right click and nothing would happen. My menu would not come up or anything. Now, I will say that I have reinstalled Halo 2 and Games for Windows and it is running flawlessly. Should have done this like 3 weeks ago!
