Windows 7 + Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 in a Dual Boot

Hello everybody.
I hope you do not delete this thread because it hasn't that much to do with win7, but just look at it and see if you can help me

Ok, my situation is this: for my studies in Brussels, they all use mac os x. I have a compaq laptop with an upgrade from vista on it (so now win7 ultimate). I do NOT want to buy a new macintosh laptop because i do not want to ruin my savers (like 900 euro's)...
So I bought my self a upgrade DVD (20 euro's) to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Is there any way I can just install that thing WITHOUT deleting my windows 7 (it has a lot of giveawayoftheday programs installed wich I use daily) so I do not want to lose them... and then set up a dual boot so I can just hit mac or windows?
My laptop is complex and i do not know a lot about computers... :shock:
Can you guys help me out?

Martin,
Windows is based off of MBR as to were OsX is based of GUID boot loaders.
Your best bet is to use a VM.

And on the legal side your breaking the EULA for OsX it states that it can only be used on apple hardware + you are trying to perform a fresh install from an upgrade another legal issue.

Hello Martin, welcome to SevenForums!

Sorry to say but without downloading a modified distribution that supports installation to MBR Partitions.

OS X (Vanilla, Retail, whatever you'll call it) only supports installation to GUID Schemed hard drives. While things such as Windows or Ubuntu support GUID and MBR (MBR is default).

Last I checked you had to go through a bunch of hoops just to get it installed, let alone working (with VMWare and VirtualBox).

Plus, not everyone has the hardware to be able to use a virtualized Operating System reasonably well, or at all!

Pusspa, thats against the rules of the forums to post that since it does indirectly promote piracy. Piracy does include Hackintosh machines. The eula reads someplace Im to lazy to read all several thousand lines again to find it, forbids the use of installation of the os onto any Hardware that's not produced by apple.

Hackintoshes are not all pirated software. Some users actually do go out and buy the DVD from Apple, we just do not pay that ridiculous price tag for their hardware.

I wouldn't say this is 'Illegal' just more so, frowned upon. As even Neowin.net has allowed the discussion of OSx86 (just you cannot post distro names, or download links). Neowin being such a decent sized website as they are, I can see them researching the legality of it before allowing such topics to be discussed.

People do this all the time with Windows 7 and no one tends to care, and when it comes to OS X people start caring!

Sorry I respond so late, but thx for your help!

DarkNovaGamer, somehow I can not PM you... My acces is denied to PM?

I used iAtkos disc so far and installed it on my seagate portable hard drive. I can boot into it but it's stuck at a gray screen where you can move the mouse but after half an hour still not doing anything... How can I fix that? I had to format this HD with GUID partition table.

HI!

I took several toturials on installing it. Anyway, I got a DVD wich is able to boot into the installation of MAC OS X.
Few questions:

They all say that you have to create a partition which is ACTIVE. My hard disk is partitioned with MBR (as normal) and in the installation they say that it should be GUID. The only way to do that is format completely and that is what i dont want!
1. Can you boot Mac OS X from an MBR partition?
2. Isn't Windows going to crash when you mark the other partition as active (using Acronis disk director Suite)? That is what I read all over the internet, and that it also what I do not want!

You will have to reinstall windows.... unless you buy a second HDD and format that as GUID for OsX.
If you intend on running OsX on a windows machine you will need a program called Chameleon it is a bootloader much similar to that of a Linux boot loader.
