Windows 7 not genuine anymore after one year of usage.

Greetings.
First of all, I have had this laptop for about a year. It worked fine with almost no problems. Until today where I got a prompt saying Windows was not genuine and the screen turned black with the words:

"Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine" in the lower right hand corner.

And here's some extra tidbits of info:
The OS was originally in Chinese (I'm living in China BTW) and my dad paid some guys to change it into English. I have no idea how they did it, but it could mean that my copy was not genuine from the start since they changed it from the pre-installed OS. Went from Win7 Basic to Win 7 Ultimate. But for some reason, my computer still received and downloaded updates normally.
And I tried the product activation key underneath the laptop but that didn't work.

Buy a retail version of Windows from a reputable store, format, then install.
