Hi, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit premium.
The disc was bought from Tesco's online.
The box and disc seem genuine.
The warning "Windows 7 is not genuine" has come up twice now, but when I click cancel everything is OK.
I activated it months ago.
What would cause this ?
Regards Graham

Was this the upgrade disc i.e. did you upgrade from Vista or did you do a clean install over XP?

Do this for debugging purposes only and only if your copy is 100% legit. Download and run RemoveWAT and reboot twice. That will disable activation security (and nagging). That's a last resort and it's completely reversible. I would call MS first as they can probably solve your problem easily.

The cause is probably the new tecnology that you downloaded to on 2/23, which allows MS to detect counterfeit more easily. Not saying that you are not legit, just saying that it is being detected as not legit.

Hello Brother,

1) If it says your windows is non-genuine and go online to resolve, agree to that and go online. In numerous cases, simply clicking on that button resolves the issue.

2) If you have a legit install (as it appears), download mgadiag.exe from the link below.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Run the tool. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in the thread below.

Windows 7 Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Windows 7) Forum

3) In feb, MS pushed a new WAT update (kb971033) which caused several genuine systems to be flagged non-genuine. If you have this update installed (check in Add Remove Programs), then do the following to fix the issue.

  • Find KB971033 and uninstall it
  • Reboot and run CMD as Admin
  • Type “slmgr –rearm” (without quotes) and hit enter
  • Reboot once the command is completed
  • After reboot, go to System Properties and select the “Change Product Key” option in the Windows Activation section.
  • Re-enter your Win7 product key, it should successfully activate now
  • Reboot
Hide KB971033 if it shows up again.

I do not think anyone really knows what MS is up to. I have heard that once every 3 months, for a while the Update will be reissued, giving everyone a chance to install it or reinstall it. After a number or tries, they plan to take action. Is it true, I do not know.

I went to download the new update to XP mode the other day and was prompted to validate before it would let me. An update to the validation check was installed during the process and now KB971033 shows up in my update history.
Sooner or later you are going to have to install it if you want to keep windows 7 patched up to date. Any body that has ever used Microsoft products knows they occasionally get it wrong. :sarc: So a false positive isn't a big surprise. If you think your install is legit follow the instructions and give Microsoft a call.
