Windows 7 OEM System buider installation for XP PC

I am trying to update my XP PC to Windows 7. Having purchased on Ebuyer the only installer available it looks like its only for use by System builders. I was looking for something that would run from the CD drive and offer an upgrade from XP or a clean installation of windows 7 - the former being preferable. Inserting the disk does not cause any installer program to run nor does it when the PC is booted with the disk in. Looking on the Microsoft website it refers to use of OPK tools for installing OEM windows 7 but I don't think these run on XP. The only thing I have not tried is to change the Bios to boot from CD.

Can anyone tell if change the Bios to boot from CD will work or whether this installer is not usable on an XP PC?

Thanks for any assistance.

Welcome Paul77 :)

You can not upgrade XP directly to win7. You have to do a new install of win7 on a new HD partition or a clean HD.

Have just sent off for a new SSD so the plan is to replace the current SSD with the new one
boot from OEM disk. Then insert the old SSD back in as another drive or use an external USB caddy
and copy over my files. Reload Microsoft Office and re-download AVG etc.

Does the old XP machine have a CD drive or DVD drive ? Windows 7 is a DVD disk. Might explain 'Inserting the disk does not cause any installer program to run nor does it when the PC is booted with the disk in'.

Blackgold BGT3650 Quad HD TV card. Also have various 3770 + 4770K render boxes.
Its a CD drive - the DVD drive was deactivated in preference to the CD drive when I updated
the motherboard and CPU so I should be able to re-connect the DVD drive by disconnecting
the CD drive.

3D Jed the windows 7 system builder disk is a DVD disk as you said so it
was never going to work in my CD drive!

If I install windows 7 to a new Samsung 840 Evo SSD does anyone know if it pre-formated
ie there's no software to run before loading windows 7 onto it - presumably only
need to run the Samsung 'Magician' software afterwards to optimise performance
(or does the Samsung Data Migration software format the disc).
