Guys, I've spent pretty much like week on this, and it's really driving me totes crazy, long story short, I tried to be smart and install 4TB hard drive on windows 7 as my OS hard drive, I know windows supports 2TB, but you can format your hard drive to GPT to allow full drive to be used, my old 500gb drive would get constantly filled up in months and had nothing I could delete to free up space, so because I had a spare 4TB laying around(Hardly used) I wanted to have 1 4tb hard drive for OS and an other for games, but for some weird.. reason my COMPUTER wont allow it, it's about to sleep outside,
My issue is this, install windows 7 on my WD BLACK 4TB hard drive. installs, boots fine, when i start installing stuff it acts like it will crash sometimes etc (Sometimes it does) depends, also odd thing i've noticed sometimes the hard drive will jump FROM NORMAL TO full, change sizes, back to normal etc., Yes I've checked cables, I've tested for bad hard drive, still stuck here... U have 2 drives 4TB exactly the same, both same problem.

and it crashes when trying to install my anti virus.

Welcome to the forum. Win7 doesnt nativly see 4tb drives you have to either use software to install it as 4tb or create 2 paritions of 2tb see

Please edit your profile with ALL your hardware specs.
GPT is only supported on Win 7 64 bits and under a UEFI BIOS.
Once you give us your hardware specs, we will see if it's possible to use the 4T disk on your computer.

I had a major break through, so I was in the mist of making a video of my problem, to post here, to give you more information, I was having said problems as always, but when i was installing my ANTI VIRUS (Normally fails on the last step and crashes me) I just randomly thought of trying to hold my Sata cable in place to make sure it was in right. (AND MAGIC IT INSTALLED) and drive seems to act normal now! not sure if all WD but my black one doesn't have those clips that holds the sata cable in place.. so it's easy to move or not be in right, I just adjusted the cable abit so it wasn't as twisted.. don't want to speak to soon! but so far not noticed any of the issues like before!

minor update, so after finally getting it to install and work correctly, found out it sometimes (STILL disconnects) but doesn't crash, the drive storage level bar will disappear.. but will disappear in a few.. I used to use black 6gb sata cables that has a latch, but it appears my WD black does not.. so the cable doesn't fit nice and snug. and is lose.. (Most likely why it disconnects., I have changed cable to a red standard cable with no latch, but it appears to click in nicely much better than the other cable, got to pull it real hard to get it out. so that's good. didn't think it was 6GB, but crystal info hard drive program tells me it is. anyway, no idea how the driver functioned as a data drive fine, and never noticed this issue until trying to put windows 7 on it.

Yes, even a cable without a clip should stay in firmly, good job getting that loose one out.

well, spoke to soon, noticed youtube/videos having this line issue, so i did an other reformat with the better fitting sata cable, ran into the same issue I normally do, no idea why i've reformatted 100 times, and out of the blue it allowed me to install my ANTI VIRUS fully, but this time it didn't even though I thought lose sata cable was the cause.

You ran into the same issue you always do, don`t know why........ Well that is telling you something is wrong and you keep doing the same thing over and over trying to get a different result.

Step 1, make sure all your hardware, cables etc, whatever, is perfect before you proceed. Spare 4 TB drive laying around, hardly used.i Why is it laying around ? Did you buy it new ? How do you know it`s in good order ?

Start at square 1, delete the entire drive to unallocated space, make sure you are installing in UEFI mode, don`t create any partitions, and just click next. You can make partitions later if you want.

Don`t start installing anything until windows is fully updated and running fine for a week.

Read step #2 to get windows update working properly and fully updated.

Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes

Exactly, but was that install done on the 500 GB drive in a non UEFI fashion on a MBR initialized drive ?

If it was, then you can`t just try to use a 4 TB drive without making changes in the bios.

These questions must be answered.

I can`t see how you`d run out of room for windows on a 500 GB drive, I would have just added the 4 TB drive as storage.

But that is of no concern now, just get your install done. :)

Well, basically I know the drive needs to be GPT format, and yes I do boot the cd drive in UEFI mode, and it installs, and shows all 4TB etc... but what is weird is when i did a re-format yesterday decided to hold in the sata cable, and the program that normally doesn't install/crashes started to install, so I assume it was the sata cable, but i did an other re-format after that due to a video issues on website displaying a line in the video, and used the better fitting cable, but noticed my hard drive as always was changing sizes while i was installing etc, like it went from empty to red, slow down/crashes, so at this stage i am a little stumped, and i have re-installed over 100 times, trying same things/different.

and yes the sata cable i used have latches but for some reason wouldn't latch on to my WD black drives, but the red one I had laying around didn't have latches but appeared to still click in nice and snug.. so i really thought that was my issue.

If your BIOS is UEFI, if it is set properly (storage set to UEFI) and you boot the installation disk as UEFI, you shouldn't have any issue to do a clean install, deleting all existing partitions and letting it create the 3 partitions (UEFI - 100M Fat32; MSR - 120M RAW and a large NTFS).

I don't think the cable is the problem. I suggest you to run the WD disk diagnostic.
