Windows 7 on OLD computers

Awesome, I love it :).

Unfortunately, my oldest computer is only a little more than 3 years old and is shown in my specs lol. I'm only 22 so I guess that's a factor in the age of computers we have lol. Not that I say you guys are old, but I would love to have such old computers.

I was just saying I would've loved to have had computers before my current one, although my parents had an old computer that had 3.1, I like to just have fun doing things like trying new things on older computers. I had a friend that had a lot of old computers but he moved away.

Anyway nowadays I can't even afford a new processor to replace the damaged one I have.

Keep your eyes open... one of my dinosaurs was rescued from a trash dumpster at an apartment building I helped move a friend into (ugly benefit of owning a truck). Anyway, the only thing wrong was the PC had a nasty virus! Its a 5 year old Dell Dimension 4600, and it rocks with Win7!

I call it T-Wrex!

I'ts amazing that with dual xeons, your cpu score is the thing pulling your total WEI down!

In all fairness, they are 1st gen P4 Xeons running at 1.5 GHz with only 256KB L2 cache. Someone earlier had posted their scores using a single P4 1.5 Ghz and their CPU score was only in the low 2s

Hello laks, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums! And you English is not that bad.

The only way to know for sure is to try it. I would recommend to you to make a complete backup of your current system and then install 7 and try it out.

The only issue I can see with your old Dell is that you will need this video driver:

; Installation inf for the Intel Corporation graphics adapter.

[Version]
Signature="$WINDOWS NT$"
Provider=%Intel%
ClassGUID={4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Class=Display
DriverVer=08/01/2006,6.14.10.4656

If you have a Vista install DVD you could get the driver from there. Here is another place to get it:

http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/41163-graphic-driver-dell-d505.html#post398702

Please let us know if we can help.

Cheers!
Robert

I'm running Win 7 on a Latitude D810 with just about indentical specs. Only hardware upgade I did was a new 320 GB 5400 RPM HDD. Other than the internal Mic not working, it runs great, probably as fast as XP. Go for it . . .

I have tried to install seven home premium on an old Dell Dimension XPS T500, upgraded 1.4 GB celeron, 640 MB ram, 80 GB harddrive, ATi 8500 128MB AGP 2x video card and has a 440 BX motherboard. The installation goes good until the first reboot, then I get a disk read error must press ctrl alt del to restart. This happens every time I try to restart there after. I get this same error when I try to install Vista on this computer but XP Pro will install just fine and is what I`m using to post this message. If anyone has any ideas I would be glad to listen.

Check the model's Support Downloads page for a BIOS revision. Compare to the current BIOS version given on first bootup screen or on BIOS setup page accessed by F-key given on first bootup screen.

Disk read is normally DVD burn or ISO but since its happening with Vista DVD, too, then it is BIOS or settings.

Are you booting from the DVD and doing a formatted install? XP's formatting is slightly different.

Yes, I`m booting from the DVD and formatting during install. I was wondering if the read error was for the DVD drive and I guess that I could change out the drive itself and see if it makes any difference.

I did the BIOS upgrade years ago and I believe it is the last one from Dell but I will double check on that. I have changed some setting in BIOS but so far nothing has helped with this error.

So far I`ve tried to install using a full retail version and a upgrade version of Windows 7 HP, and Vista was on a Dell supplied disc.

Thanks for your input.
