Windows 7 on OLD computers

That has 855GM video. The best place to get the driver is here but unfortunately, the latest is only for XP.

It will not work well with Aero or very well at all on 7.

I have an old Toshiba A55 Satellite 512MB with this chipset running 7 quite well (no Aero though).

This thread details getting the display drivers to operate.

How about this: Notebook with 1GHz Pentium M, 1GB Ram. 60GB HD. Ran the RC on it and except for no Aero due to the display adapter, it actually was quite useable. everything worked with the drivers included with Windows.

I got Windows 7 working on a new type of processor. It is called the Binary Reductive Electro-Alchemic Diode, the latest and greatest from Intel Labs. Granted, I had to put an emulation layer called TOAST in, but I think the result turned out pretty good. I have only got basic editing working at the moment, but I am working on getting DX11 going for some cool effects.

Think you will also need to install the Joule Amplification Module (J.A.M) to enable DX11.

Hi,

I'm thinking of installing Windows 7 on this hardware. Right now it has XP SP3 on it and it is sort of slow. I will be upgrading to 1.5GB of Ram as I found some sticks on flebay for cheap.

Specs:

Abit KT7a-Raid Mobo (from about 2001)
AMD Duron 950 Mhz - Spitfire Core (Only has 64KB L2)
896MB of PC133 SDRam ( I will max it out at 1.5GB of Ram)
ATI Radeon AGP 7000 32MB of Ram
40GB Hard Drive

If Windows 7 would a little faster or just as fast (slow) as XP then I would attempt to install it but I'm afraid the Duron will be too slow to handle things.

I don't care about Aero so that would not be a problem for me.

Also those Abit KT7a VIA KT133a Chipset Boards where not the most stable back then but works fine with XP right now.

I'm afraid that I would get the APCI non-compliant error that some are getting during the install.

thanks for any input

BD :o

If it can't run it won't install. I tried to install it on a sub-1ghz processor and it refused.

If the graphics are too weak or memory is under spec it will turn off Aero.

I run it on a 538 1.2 ghz HP 510 test notebook but can't run even a lightweight AV or more than a few windows if I want it to stay fast. I'm waitin for another 512 which will be enough for that.

Your RAM would probably cut it but it might not install to a sub-1ghz processor. Try it?

that brings up memories
oh i remember my duron (had it at 1.2 i believe)....:p
i had about the same specs but with 128mb (eventually went up to 256mb) Ram
and no AGP card..
and with a 30gb Western Digital (which still works to this day)..:)
it all died with a short that killed everything except the drive

The sad this is that this 6-year-old machine is my main computer :P
It was top of the line back in it's day, and it still runs 7 flawlessly, so i'm ok with it.

You might be able to drop an AMD XP 2400 (266) Thorton(Thornton) straight in the socket without any mods whatsoever!
These are pretty rare however as they were not made for very long!

Compare/check core/voltages are supported on your motherboard.

My old Asus A7M266-Raid even recognised the processor/name and was seriously quick (in raid) with XP Pro!
(otherwise bios screen will just say "15x processor" on start up)

According to this page XP2400+ DO work on KT7a's!
http://hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-721030.html

" I changed "CPU Drive Strength" from AUTO to '2' in the BIOS and that seems to have been just the thing, running 15x133 = 2000MHz now."

Athlon XP Thorton 2400+ (266) 15x AXDC2400DKV3C 1.65v (circa 2003)
(A Thorton was a cut-down 'Barton' - only 256k onboard cache!)

(Don't buy the MP 2400+ laptop/mobile processor or you will end up soldering and modding!)

Get it on Ebay for peanuts - you will obviously have to source an upgraded Socket A fan too!

It will run, but very slow. :o

I have built a 400mhz, & 600mhz box with 512 ram & they run, browse internet, do email, etc.

You won't be able to do major applications or play a lot of intensive games

But they were neat Science Projects for me :geek:

Should run no problem! I have it running on a PIII 800MHz with 512 MB RAM... your major issue will be your video card. You cant run aero with only 64MB of video ram.

Should run no problem! I have it running on a PIII 800MHz with 512 MB RAM... your major issue will be your video card. You cant run aero with only 64MB of video ram.

You can get a reasonable facsimile by using "True Transparency".
Enjoy you system...I find my Dell C640 2.6mhz (PIV-m) and 2 gb ram works perfectly and the lack of AREO does not negetively effect my productivity. When I want an AREO fix I turn on True Transparency and it appears like HP (but don't need this function to work so don't use it much).
It also works on my C600 700mhz/1.0ghz (PIII) with 512ram without any issue (again try True Transperency and you will like the apperance. This system is very stable and productive on these older systems and don't forget you can probably upgrade your ram and/or processor. Check into Bios updates to find how far you can go.

Good luck .... let us know how it goes.
