Windows 7 Pro 64-bit installation fails to finish on home build ASUS

Hi,

I have recently purchased Windows 7 Pro 64-bit to install on another partition on my Vertex III SSD drive. For work related reason I have mainly used Windows XP Pro (32-bit), so this also is the case for my home desktop PC.

I recently purchaed Windows 7 and have attempted to install it on a second partition of about 60Gb on my SSD drive. The Windows 7 install setup loads no problems, I choose the partition to install onto, and go through the procedure of installing.

The installation uncompresses the windows files etc, then proceedes and then requests to restart the PC in 10s etc. It does this and does some futher installation during wich the screen stays blanc (dark) with the monitor on. Then the finalising installation window setup pops up and there is another reset of the PC.

At this stage the boot choice menu for Windows 7 shows up, with "olfer versions of Windows" and the Windows 7 choice showing. I choose the Windows 7 boot and the Windows 7 boot logo shows up briefly, after which the monitor goes blanc (dark) with the monitor light ON (not standby). The disk light flashes for a while (20s or so), but after that very little disk activity goes on, with the monitor still blanc with monitor light ON (not standby mode).

I left it like this for 3 minutes even after a second attempt of installation, but the installation appears to stop at the same point and the monitor stays blanc, with no further indication of installation activity and no final welcome to windows 7 screen - nothing, no BSOD, just blanc screen !!

At no stage was I ever asked for a serial number as with a Win XP installation, so I am completely lost as to where I am in the installation process ?!? I do not really know what to expect, or if I should leave the installation longer when in the blanc screen mode. Basically I was expecting some feedback from the installation where it is, and not just a blanc screen as it seems to always end up in ...

I have previously checkd that Windows 7 64-bit will run on my ASUS P5G41T-M LE motherboard with 8Gb of memory. There is only a wireless card and a basic soundblaster audio card installed. Windows XP pro 32-bit is already installed and working on the other partition and I can still acess it no problems.

I was expecting the Windows 7 installation to run smoother and with no issues, but this is not the case and I have no idea what could be wrong, if there are some drivers missing, or other compatibility problems etc.

Would appreciate some ideas on what might be wrong and how to proceed. Thanks in advance....

Thanks, but my installation never finishes

It never even gets to this screen after what appears to be a final restart

Basically it just stops at a blanc screen and it does not go any further.

Any other ideas for what may be wrong ? I would have thought the ASUS P5G41T-M LE motherboard is modern enough to be compatible with Windows 7 pro 64-bit.

Try deleting the Win7 target partition from the booted Win7 DVD using Custom install Drive Options as shown in Steps 6/7 of Clean Install Windows 7 then create New and Format before install.

There is no user participation required at all until it asks you to type in User name, skip password, skip activation for now, see if it asks for network information which means it will already have your LAN driver and be prepared to connect.

If not install LAN driver as soon as you get to desktop to do all Important and Optional Updates after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) . Don't import any drivers until all rounds of updates are done so you can see what is still missing in Device Manager.

The same steps as here in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 should be used to get a perfect install.

Hi thanks for the suggestions. I did delete de partition and formated it before install. Unfortunately the installation process stalls at the same point. After the third reset, there is a boot option menu that allows a choice to boot from Windows 7 or from previous versions of Windows. I choose Windows 7, the logo appears then the screen goes blanc after 20 seconds and it stalls like that for the rest of the time. There is no disk access activity other than a regularpulse every 1s or so ... nothing else, no welcome screen no windows is starting for the first time, nothing at all ! I have tried installation with a 32-bit windows 7 pro disk (I had an OEM version kicking about) and exactly the same thing happens ! It looks like this ASUS mb is just not Windows 7 compatible, even though the MS Windows advisor software tells me it is no problems bar some software like Acrobat 6 etc. It looks like a new mb if I want to run Windows 7 ... any suggestions for a good LGA 775 socket mb that is definitley win 7 compatible ? Try with 2gb of ram.

In addition to removing all but 2gb RAM to try install, recreating partition each time, use 64 bit Win7 with 8gb RAM or you waste half of your RAM.

It sounds as if you've got the OS installed but it won't start up due possibly to drivers loading. So follow these steps to enter Device Manager and disable any device drivers showing in error (!) until it will start and you can update them from the desktop using Windows Updates as described: Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation

Unfortunately however the most common fix for install failure is to wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command from the installer's Repair Command Line, which you cannot do with XP already onboard unless you back up XP as an image first for this purpose. If you choose to try this then I would define a Primary NTFS Active partition using Step 2.2 in SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation
