Windows 7 product key with OEM installation

Anyone know whether the product ID on --Computer>properties>windows activation-- should be changed to the product key during activation or just as it is ( with OEM in between numbers)?

the reason is that I did clean install to my laptop and managed to get a copy of installations CD which is OEM. during installation and when finished, I entered product key that found at the bottom of my laptop (with COA , etc. it is genuine).

Strange enough is that after I finish the activation process, the product ID still as it is and not the numbers I entered.

I did some checking with microsoft and asked me to input product ID, which identified as a chargeable product ID since it is OEM and I should contact the computer manufacturer.

can someone please explain if happened to know the situation between Microsoft , Computer manufacturer, and customer who in need to clean install their computer so that we , as customer, know at which step of the process we are actually in, and what other actions needed.

The code with -OEM- in it is the Product ID - not the Key.
If you used the manufacturer's Recovery media to reinstall, you should not have needed to enter the Key at all - it seems that you used some other media.


I'm not sure what your problem actually is - since you say that you successfully used the COA Key for the install.

ALL machines from the large manufacturer's come with two Keys - the OEM_SLP Key with which the machine is installed by the Recovery Media, and in the manufacturer's initial install - and the COA_SLP Key, which is the one on teh Sticker, for use if hte OEM_SLP self-activation system breaks down for some reason.


To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Contacted my manufacturer, and they say that since I reinstall with Software CD that do not came along with my machine ( the recovery disc / original software CD that came along with the machine is at my other office out of town) then I can ignore product key, the important thing is that when I reinstall and inputed product KEY on the sticker, the last 4 digits of the product ID shown tally with the digits shown above the product key on the sticker, and It is !!

So, if that is true , then I should not be worry , however I would like to have my product key which tally with my sticker shown on the system ( if possible )

correct me if i am wrong, my understanding is that product ID and Digits shown above the product key on the sticker is somewhat act as parents of several product keys.
so that when I re instal, the activation system were unable to detect product key, and returned with some digits ( shown as product ID on the system ) that covers several product keys instead ( which the last 4 digits tally with the digits shown above the product key on the sticker)

The Key you are using here is an OEM System Builder one - not, as I was expecting, a DirectOEM SLP or COA Key (such as from Dell/Toshiba/etc) - which explains why you had to enter the Key during the install.

Product ID's are produced at the time of the installation using a 'hash' of the Product Key and the hardware description from the BIOS and other places. Thousands (eve, potentially, millions) of roughly similar machines will share the same PID, while the Key is unique to your machine only (except in the case of DirectOEM installs, and Volume Keys).

You can NEVER 'ignore' the Product Key - the only one which you are allowed to use on that machine is the one on the sticker, or one purchased separately nad not otherwise in use.
The installation disk is almost irrelevant.
Interestingly, this is the second time in three days where a Starter edition has proved to be an OEM System Builder license, and I had previously been under the impression that Starter was a DirtectOEM product only - which means that such Keys should be limited to specialist markets such as MSDN or TechNet. My MS contact has however confirmed that such Keys do exist on the open market, and are genuine (mostly).

Your system appears to be properly activated and validated.

The Product Key shown in the report ends in DP4T9-84WVJ-G99JY if the one on your sticker does not end in the same characters, you should change the Key to the one on your sticker using the command
SLUI 3
in the Search box from the Start button.
You may need to activate by phone.

Note that if the Key above is not from your machine you would appear to have 'stolen' someone else's Key - and their machine may end up being declared invalid as a result. It would be a good idea to warn them that in such a case, they would need to use telephone activation to regain the key after speaking to an operator.
