Hello all

I have got into a situation with my wife's computer that needs reactivation, the situation is that it has not been done any windows updates on this PC for a long time (no comments on this needed please)

So when I try to reactivate windows I get the message that I have to run the WindowsActivationUpdate.exe, and I did, nothing useful came out of this.
When I try to reactivate windows I get the following error message:
A problem occurred when windows tried to activate: Error Codee 0x8007232B

I really can't find a solution to this, as I don't have the activation code to reenter...

Any good suggestions?

Regards Haraldo

The installed license is a KMS Volume License - which requires periodic re-activation at the issuing organisation's private Activation Server, rather than MS's servers.

The machine shipped with Vista installed, rather than Windows 7.
When was the 'upgrade' installed? By whom? What was the source?

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

The COA sticker is with Windows vista and is not applicable for the OS on the computer, I don't have an applicable windows activation code

MS Windows 7 pro (Not OEM version) was installed by sysadm at the previous company where my wife worked before, I am not sure which kind of license and how it was activated at that time, I didn't know they had private activation servers there....

reading other threads I realize I should at least do: chkdsk /R and sfc /scannow
Doing this now, and will see if something useful comes out of this, will report back later...

There's no point - you'll have to do a reformat and reinstall Windows Vista - which your system is still licensed for.
Can you still read the Vista COA sticker that should be present on the machine's case?

No chance to install Vista....
If I get to the company network again, will I be able to reactivate via their private activation servers?

Why can't you install Vista?

You'd have to ask for the access details for re-activation, as they appear to have been removed. You would also have to re-connect at least every 180 days (or less, if the servers are set to allow a shorter period).

I think Vista is the worst operating system ever...... and no chance I'm going to suggest that to my lovely wife
Reactivating every 180 days at a private activation server is not going to do it .....

So it probably means going to Ubuntu/Cinnamon or purchasing windows

Vista RTM was atrocious - with SP2 installed it's very nearly as good as Windows 7. The trick is to properly get the Service Packs installed, and the system fully updated.

Hello all
So I managed to get hold of a valid MS produt activation key so now I have the windows system activated via a Microsoft server, this is what MGADiag reports,'
Is it now the case that I don't have to reactivate windows at a later stage?

Next issue now is Windows update, that fails with error code: 8024402C
Googling this, it seems that the computer is set to retrieve updates from a server within the company network and not from Microsoft, so the thing is
- The computer is still coupled to the domain of the company from where it was bought
a) will taking the computer out of the domain change the update policies so updates will be taken from Microsoft instead?
b) As computer is managed by the group policies I don't have rights to change update settings, even being administrator of the PC
So I can't change these things directly from control panel

Any good ideas how to fix the update settings so we retrieve updates from Microsoft and not from a private WSUS server.....

Unfortunately, the only good way I know to divorce a machine from a domain (which the IT department should have done prior to releasing the machine) is a reformat and reinstall.

The product Key in use now is a COA_SLP Key - as you say, it's apparently properly activated. It's now locked to that motherboard, and cannot be used elsewhere. A reformat/reinstall shouldn't cause problems, if you use that Key together with a Retail disk so long as you first get the necessary drivers from the HP site (for anything that isn't bundled inside Windows 7)

OK Thanks, but is there any way to find which .iso file will be the correct one, for the activation key that I have, which should match the windows version installed.... Not sure I understand the difference between all these N, E versions and different license types.....
