Solved Windows 7 Proressional Activation is not valid after cloning

The original Windows 7 home premium was installed and activated By HP from whom the computer was purchased in 2010. We later purchased an anytime upgrade to Windows 7 Professional and
activated on the original hard drive. In Oct 2014, the original hard drive was replaced with a higher capacity drive and the system was cloned to the new hard drive.

Now windows update will not work. A message is received that the service is not running, however when it is check in services it is running. We received a message that the windows 7 pro is not genuine. We ran the validation routine and it asked for our product key. We entered the only product key we have; the key for the anytime upgrade to Windows 7 Professional, the dialog stated that the key was invalid.

We contacted Windows "Support.Microsoft.com/help" connected with a technician who stated that to correct the system we would have to perform a clean install of a full version of Windows 7 Professional to correct the situation, since the original installation was tied to the identity of the original hard drive.

Intuitively, one would assume that there is some other way. Can you help?

Hello and welcome quoin mate try this and if your activation code is valid you should be ok to go

Just make sure you wipe the drive and format it ready and don't be tempted to pick a higher version than you have - it ends in grief. If this does not work then contact Microsoft and get instructions from them.

Personally mate I am not a fan of upgrades having problems in the past myself.

I downloaded and ran the iata_enu.exe file as you suggested, however it reports: "this os is not supported".

I do not want to do a clean install.

Ok quoin go with Noels advice I only posted what I did because I saw you had been waiting for a while for a reply and to me a clean install is what I thought is what you could do to avoid the niggles that upgrade might have been causing.

Personally I am not a fan of upgrades having a few problems in the past myself and it seems I have sent you down the wrong path - apologies for the mistake.

We are happy to report, that after trying at a later time, the IRST drivers did load and run and after several restarts Windows Update service begin to function and now everything seems to be functioning correctly.

From what I am able to learn during this process it seems that the cloning process did not copy any of the previous updates from the original drive. So the past issued updates had to be installed.

I suspect that you are misreading the situation a little.

It always takes at least TWO reboot for the IRST or IMST install to properly bed in and may need another nudge or two as well - but it is not a surefire cure for the error messages that you had.

A proper system image backup/restore process will always restore the system to the exact same state - the problem is that a change of hard drives may require a change of the associated drivers. Such a change often happens automatically on the first reboot after the clone - but it can also fail for any number of reasons.
When it does fail, then you see the problem you got.
There may also have been a pre-existing problem with Windows update (or the drivers) which prevented installation of updates, and which may not have been obvious. A fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 will have about 150 updates to install - how many were installed in your newly-restored system?
