Windows 7 puts numbers after my wireless network name

Please assist

I know this is an old post, but I am encountering the same problem and I can't connect to the internet.

A few days ago, my network was connecting to it's normal name but later I was not able to connect because it is names "XXX 2" I disabled it and my original one popped up again and it's fine.

Now, I can't even disable and enable back to my original one. I've tried deleting it on that screen shot that was given and connecting again but still no luck.

I can't seem to connect back to my original network name. Please help!

Entangle's post about going into the registry and deleting all the old files worked perfectly. If you don't know how to get into the registry, just google it.

Ultimate cause and fix

This discussion was very helpful, showing how I could repair the damage Windows 7 keeps doing to itself. However, the ultimate problem remains---Windows 7 keeps creating new network names and registry entries, in my case every time I tether through an Android phone.

Any ideas how Windows 7 can be prevented in the first place from senselessly creating new network names every time?

The only idea I can come up with is a batch file that removes the entire affected registry branch and recreates it with its original content. That, however, would also prevent any genuinely new network to be established and is therefore not a good workaround. It would still require babysitting.

Easy Solution to this inquiry

i found that if you go to the "Network and Sharing Center" and click on the little icon under "view your active networks" you will be able to change the icon, as well as rename your network. in addition to that you if you take a look at the bottom of that window, you will see a link stating "Merge or Delete your network locations". click on this and you will be able to merge all the networks (not including the active one) and or delete the unused connections.
