Windows 7 Random Reboots no BSoD

I am currently having a problem with a computer I built. The computer when you have it in normal startup or selective startup will reboot itself when you are watching videos online. The reboot will happen quicker in IE 8 then Firefox 3.6 but will do it in both. There is no BSoD on reboot. I have deselected the automatic reboot selection in case of a BSoD just in case there is one. In the event viewer it just says the computer rebooted but doesn't have an error saying why it rebooted. I have checked the temps and they are with in spec.

If I go in safe mode it will not reboot itself. This leads me to believe it is a driver/software problem. I have checked the memory with memtest86+ 4.10 and it passes. I have ran sfc and chkdsk and both found no problems. I have downloaded the latest drivers for the motherboard and video card. The computer will not reboot itself if it is left idle. It only reboots when you use the internet or internet video.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Ben

We would be more useful if we had the actual DMp file usually created when the computer crashes. Use these to find it (if there is one) and upload it. http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/34900-1-novice-how-ask-help-bsod-problem.html

Thats one of the problems I am running into. There is no dump file created when it reboots. There is no log created in event viewer other then the system rebooted. This is what is making it so hard to figure out.

You might want to go to Resplendence and read about and DL the free WhoCrashed which is an automated crash dump analyzer. I find that most of the time it will accurately report faulty drivers - better than EV and on par with a lengthy dmp file analysis - without all of the enigmatic computer speak.

Sorry, but unless I'm mistaken, WhoCrashedIt won't work if there is no dmp.

Monk, he doesnt have DMP's and who crashed, while a good entry level program oftem gives incomplete analysis

Two points:

1. WhoCrashed is, indeed, a great entry-level app;

2. I completely forgot about the lack of a dmp file.

It's no excuse but I claim age!

I will swap out the PSU but it is brand new 500W coolmaster. The times it dumps vary but if the computer is not being used it doesn't reboot. Ran all night long last night without rebooting. When you start using it and especially if you are watching video online it reboots.

I should restate that if it is in safe mode it doesn't reboot while watching the online video.

since it works in safe mode I would think it is software. Still could be hware but not likely.

That is what my thoughts are but its a fresh install of Windows 7 and seems to happen only on this computer. I am not sure if it is a driver problem or software glitch.

OK you can use msconfig (type that in search) to do limited diagnostic reboots to determine which software (driver ) is giving you grief

OK before I stab in the dark . . .

If I understand correctly, you have unchecked the AUTOMATIC RESTART box in the STARTUP AND RECOVERY settings and there is no info of use on the screen when the computer stops running. You state that the issue occurs while watching videos. You also note that the issue does not occur in SAFE MODE.

In safe mode you are running generic drivers, especially gfx drivers. Of course, it could be anything but, in my experience this is a gfx issue in the overwhelming majority of cases.

It could, of course, be RAM but I have not experienced RAM issues to any great degree. PSU? I have never experienced a PSU issue. Overheating: quite possible and not that uncommon. And, both PSU and overheating issues might not be manifest in safe mode because of decreased demands on the system. Malware: possibly but, for average conscientious computing it is usually not an issue.

Gfx drivers? By far, the greatest number of issues I have experienced are gfx in origin, primarily drivers. So, I would suggest you uninstall your gfx driver, boot, and run on Windows generic drivers. (Close down any automatic system attempt to install drivers) See what happens.

Again, I would start with the most likely - for me a gfx driver.

Ken, I have tried the selected boot on msconfig and it does it for both the selective and normal.

Mark, I have verified the RAM with memtest86+ and it passes. The cpu temp is in the normal range. This is a brand new computer. As for the gfx driver I will try your suggestion. I believe this started with the windows driver and I thought it might be the cause so I downloaded the latest driver from ATI and tried it. The computer hasn't been used enough to be infected yet but I did think of that also.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the help it is greatly appreciated as I have been hitting my head against a wall trying to figure this out.

Haven't tried that. I will try it first thing in the morning. I just rolled back the drivers for the video so will try that first then start going through the non-MS startup items.

I know how frustrated you must feel. Been there myself, but I feel like this is something we can probably fix. It is just going to take bit longer.

Do you by chance have an app called team viewer? it is a remote desktop 3rd party app
