Hello,

I am new to this forum and I have a problem regarding my Dell Vostro 1014.
I had Windows 7 installed i it with laptop specs. as Core2Duo, 2GBRam. I had my windows working really slow recently and I tried everything from system restore to system image to startup repair. I noticed that windows would start really slow and whenever i try to run applications it would hang and eventually I had to restart the laptop. It went slow even in the safe mode. So I decided to format it and install a fresh version which I did. BUt still it is running very slow. I again went for a format and tried Vista and found it slow as well. What's might be the reason. I want it to be working properly because my all works are hampered.

ssanjy,

Here's how to fluff out those system specs for us:

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
(left-hand column)

To gather info, use SIW or Speccy or System Info

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
Increase your RAM. 2 GB is the minimum i guess. If you are using 64 bit version then change it to 32 bit. Some antivirus software are very heavy on resourse. Try some light antivirus like avast or MSE if looking for a paid alternative Nod 32 is petty light. I also have 2 GB RAM, and i have disabled some of the windows feature like indexing, gadget, media player etc. You can try that too. But You will only gain noticable performance improvement by increasing your RAM atleast by another 2 GB.

If a fresh install off of a USB stick or DVD (not a recovery install, but clean install from Windows media) is slow, and this affects more than one operating system, the likelihood is it's your hard disk as OldMX has pointed out. It *could* be RAM, but usually you'll end up with BSODs rather than hangs if that is the case. If you have the time, running Dell's diagnostic tools would be good here.

Thanks guys for the response. I had recently installed Win XP and the problem still exits. I am thinking of taking it to the service centre. As cluberti suggested, I'm currently running the diagnostic toll and hope it will have some results to show. I'll keep posting for any update in this matter to share the information. Thanks again. Will need your help in the future.:D
