I just bought a used computer from a local repair store. After 1 day I got the message saying I don't have a valid copy of Windows 7. I searched and saw that I should DL and run MGADiag. Here's the printout.

Is there anything I need to be concerned about? I only have 5 days left on their return policy and I really can't afford to buy a stand alone version of Windows 7.

Thanks!

This machine was constructed TWO YEARS before Windows 7 was released - and therefore cannot possibly support a OEM_SLP Key for Windows 7 such as is currently installed.

Apart from that, there is a Trusted Store tamper present - which could indicate either attempts to bypass activation and validation requirements, or the presence of malware. There is also a File mismatch which could indicate an attempt to install an Activation Exploit to avoid activation requirements.

The installation cannot possibly be genuine.

You should
1) demand a refund from the vendor
2) threaten them with legal action - in the US, the FBI has jurisdiction over counterfeit software, and threats of reporting the case to them will often yield positive responses ( or the rapid disappearance of the vendor)
3) report the vendor to MS for them to follow up - How to Tell ? Hardware is your starting-point.
4) NOT GIVE UP! - it's only if these frauds (and legally, they have committed fraud) are hounded to the ends of the earth that they will learn.

Well I ran the 'activate windows' app from the Run box of the Start Menu and I ran the online Microsoft tool and both are saying it's a genuine install.

Is it possible that it's somehow fooling them to report a false genuine? The 'Not Genuine' message in the bottom right of my screen disappeared too but it was there earlier.

I hope someone from Microsoft can answer this because I have until tomorrow to return it.

Thanks again.

Please post another MGADiag report - there is NO WAY this should be showing as genuine, unless you've changed the Product Key to a legitimate one.

..There are no MS employees who know anything about this subject on these (or almost any other) forums.
You already have the most experienced person (possibly in the world) assisting you - me :)
I have dealt with thousands of such cases both here and in the MS 'official forums' at Microsoft forums - Windows 7 Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Windows 7) which I moderate for MS (unpaid! :().

The only way you may get 'official' MS word - and it won't be in writing - is to attempt telephone activation and speak to an operator.
