Windows 7 Service Pack 1 update error 800b0100

Hello,

I have seen that this problem has been solved before on this forum for other people, but that it is different in each case.
I have tried to install windows Service Pack Update through windows update and also downloading it. Both won't install due to error 800b0100.
I also dowloaded the recomended Windows6.1-KB947821-v12-x64.msu file to check the problem and maybe solve it. It hasn't worked.
I add the checksur log file, hoping someone may help me.

All of the content listed in the CheckSUR.log are contained in Service Pack 1.
So, the download or the installation may have been corrupted by 3rd party software interference.

To rule out both conditions suggest you first configure your system to Clean boot - How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

NOTE: In the Clean boot state all 3rd party firewalls will be Disabled. If a 3rd party firewall was previously being used, ensure that the native Windows 7 firewall is now On in Control Panel.

Then download and save the full, standalone of Windows 7 SP1 x64
Click the Continue button to Validate Win 7 first, then download and save windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

When the download completes close all open programs and web browsers.

Create a folder on the root drive ( the drive where Windows is installed on, usually, C:\ ), name it SP1, ServicePack, or whatever suits your fancy.
Open the folder, right click windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe , choose 'Run as administrator', agree to the UAC prompt.
Do all of the restarts while the system is still in the Clean boot configuration.

Did that get SP1 installed ?
Whether it did nor did not, after the attempt to apply SP1, undo the Clean boot configuration and restart to normal Windows mode now.

Thank you MowGreen for your advice.
I tried, and it did not get installed.
It shows an error message (attached, in spanish). It says something like "Insallation could not be made correctly. A system error prevented the Service Pack from insalling. Please dowload and run System Update Readiness. If System Update Readiness doesn't solve the problem please visit microsoft..."
I did all this in clean boot, without other programms running, as recommended.
Any other advice?

The files that are corrupted are contained in Service Pack 1. So either the download of SP1 was corrupted or there's an issue with the servicing stack, which the System Update Readiness Tool can not fix.

1) To be perfectly clear here, was Service Pack 1 downloaded from within the Clean boot state or did you download it in normal Windows mode and then configure the system to Clean boot for the installation of SP 1 ?

2) Please open Programs and Features by clicking the Start orb.
In the Search programs and files field type in appwiz.cpl
Under Programs, click on appwiz.cpl

Now click on the 'View installed updates' in the left frame.
Is Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2534366) installed ?

Please post back with the answers to questions 1 and 2.

1. I downloaded Service Pack 1 from within the clean boot, and saved the download directly to C:/SP1/. Then I tried to install it without rebooting (and closed all programs, too).
2. It says update KB2534366 is installed.

KB974571 was the last update installed and it was released October 12, 2009.
Did you decline to install that update or was this the first time that it was offered to your system ?

There are several methods we can use to replace the corrupted content that is showing in the CheckSUR.log. However, that content should not be present until SP1 has been installed.
This entry clearly shows the content is part of SP1

Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514.mum
Package_for_KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~ar-SA~6.1.7601.17514.mum

When Win 7 is first installed the file Versions would be 6.1.7600.16385
After SP1 is installed, the Versions will be 6.1.7601.17514

Let's try this first ... stop the Cryptographic service.

Click the Start orb; in the Search programs and files field type in ser
Under Programs, right click Services and choose 'Run as administrator', agree to the UAC prompt.
Locate Cryptographic Service and click once on it.
Now click the 'Stop the service' link.
When it's stopped, using Windows Explorer ( Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer ) navigate to

Windows\System32
Right click on the catroot2 subfolder and choose Rename
Add .old to the end of catroot2, as shown below

If a UAC prompt appears, agree to it, then close Windows Explorer.

Go back to the Services console, click on Cryptographic Service and click the Start the service link.
When the service starts, close the Services console.

The catroot 2 subfolder will be recreated by Windows when it restarts so,
restart the system now.

After it's been restarted configure it to Clean boot once again.
After it's been started to the Clean boot state, try to install SP1 again.
Did that get it installed ?


I'm not sure we can manually replace the corrupted content that CheckSUR found since it's part of SP1 ... but, there's no harm trying although it may take awhile as there are 54 files that need to be replaced.

You may need to either do an "in-place upgrade", aka Repair Installation or, even worse, do a Clean installation of Windows 7.

As to the cause of this strange issue -

1) What is the installed antivirus/ security suite?
2) Is a 3rd party firewall installed ?
3) Have you checked the Hard Drive and memory for any issues ?
4) Was a 'registry cleaner' ever run ?

Hello,
I am in the clean boot stadium, downloading the Service Pack 1 again to C:, but I can reply to the last four questions meanwhile.

1) I have AVG free edition 2011
2) I have no other firewall than windows firewall, which I have not changed since I installed win 7 (a month ago).
3) I have not checked the hard drive nor the memory. The computer is just a month old. (probably that would be a good reason to check it...)
4) I have never run a registry cleaner.

I installed windows 7 in the computer about a month ago and have just been installing other software to work with.
Another thing that might be important is that it seems that the first install of SP1 was cancelled. At least it says so in the Update history which I attach. I have no conciousness of shutting down the computer while it was installing it, ...but it might have happened.
As soon as I have finished with the clean boot installing I tell you what happened. I hope it will work.

Thank you for posting the Installed Updates list.
AVG Free 2011 includes an antispyware component. Which means that Windows Defender should not be running nor updating it's definitions.
Yet, on May 17th, there's an entry showing it doing just that, updating it's definitions.

How long ago was AVG installed ?
Which antivirus program was replaced by it ?

It did not work out. I tried installing from the clean boot having modified the cartroot folder, but I got the same message as before. I suppose I will have to install windows 7 again.
I bought the computer on 17th may, and installed windows 7 that day. I installed AGR the same evening or the day after. It is probable that I run a windows update before I did it. That would maybe explain why it is intalled on that day.

I hope you did not rename the Catroot subfolder as my instructions clearly show that
Catroot 2 is the folder that needs to be renamed.

If you renamed the Catroot subfolder, rename it and then rename Catroot2 only, please.
