Do you have the downloaded folder in which the gadget files a are stored? If so rename the folder to Gadgetname.gadget (gadgetname can be whatever you want to name it) and move the folder to C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\ and then right click the desktop, click gadgets, and it should be listed there as one you can use.

I'm reviving this long dead thread to provide information regarding this gadget and installation. When Network Meter is downloaded from Addgadget.com, it is in a zip file. When the contents are extracted, there is a file ending in the .gadget extension. However, this is not a proper .gadget file, but another zip file without the .zip extension. It must be renamed to add the .zip to the end. At that point, the sidebar should be closed through the Task Manager and the contents of the zip file extracted to c:\users\username\appdata\local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Network Meter. The sidebar can then be reactivated by right clicking on the desktop and clicking on Gadgets. Network Meter will then be present in the Sidebar list.
